Phone Change...Droid X ---> Samsung Fascinate?

Thread Starter
Have a change to trade my Droid X and a bit of cash maybe (small amount) for a new white Samsung Fascinate.

I'm not unhappy with the Droid X, but it is a bit large for my tastes so pockets and such are a slight issue. I definitely like the white Fascinate more from an aesthetic perspective, but am not sure about technical specifications.

Can anyone comment on pros/cons of either? I believe I have heard the Droid X offers a bit more with the Android OS, but with recent OTA updates, I'm not sure that variance still exists. I am also not certain that, even if there were vast variations that the Droid X was better equiped for, it would be for uses I would have a need for.

Benefits to fascinate:

1: unlocked bootloader
2: SAMOLED Screen (lower real res, but better colors and low power reqs)
3: Better Battery Life
4: Smaller Footprint
5: Curved edges (+ to some, I like angular design though)

Droid X:
1: Larger Screen
2: SLCD (better actual resolution, but bad brightness and bad pixel density due to its size)
3: Fully Functioning GPS
4: Sekseh design.

I would have to go with the fascinate because of the locked bootloader on the X. In addition, 2.3 is already being ported to SGS phones with great success.

Not true, the DX has been modified to allow custom roms

samsung makes fantastic phones. much more durable than any other brand i have ever had experience with. and that goes for everyone in my family too. these days, i wont buy any other brand, because i break all my phones made by any other maker in a matter of weeks.

plus, i wasnt impressed with the droids i got my hands on.

The Samsung Fascinate isn't much smaller than the Droid X. Samsung no small phone.

I've been doing a ton of research on the Fascinate recently, thinking about getting one for the holidays. A friend also has the DX, which I've been able to mess with.

Fascinate:
  1. True. However, the Fascinate is still stuck on 2.1 - with or without modification. XDA cannot update the phone due to a missing firmware component. This is purely Samsung's fault.
  2. Super AMOLED uses a different pixel/subpixel arrangement than LCD. This is known as PenTile Matrix. Engadget has pictures of both in its Desire SAMOLED vs. SLCD review. Basically, it's a matter of preference. SAMOLED is more power efficient.
  3. Debatable.
  4. True, but not significantly smaller.
  5. Matter of opinion, as you stated.

Droid X:
  1. True.
  2. The X doesn't have an SLCD or IPS LCD; it's just a standard TFT LCD. This means that you sacrifice some color accuracy and viewing angle.
  3. The Fasciate's GPS problem is a software bug. It has been fixed with the DJ05 update.
  4. Matter of opinion, as you stated.

XDA has successfully ported 2.3 to the Galaxy S i9000 (international GSM), and possibly other GSM models by now. CDMA models are currently left in the cold. This is no fault of XDA.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but neither phone is particularly great for modding. HTC's Droid Incredible and the original Droid remain the most mod-friendly phones in VZW's lineup. They're old. I feel your pain. CES is on January 6th, so until then, I'll be eagerly awaiting some fresh, mod-friendly hardware for VZW.

I bought a Droid X for my brother and a Fascinate for myself about 10 days ago. I absolutely love the fascinate and all of my friends that have the droid x have said how much better they think it looks, and how much faster my phone is, especially rooted with a custom rom and kernel the phone is awesome. Sure it doesn't have the most development but its still more than I can handle. I suggest you go to a store and play with both and decide what matters to you in a phone.

Yes, but with the Droid x, if try to flash the 2.2 spf when you have 2.2.1, you have yourself a brick.
