Overclocking questions with 9850, multiplier drop

Hello Guys,

It's is both my first post here and my first attempt to overclock a CPU.

I hope you can see my system specs attached to this post.

My 9850 CPU is not BE and I want to target something like 20% overclocking from 2500 to 3000 MHz.

I read the guides and I guess I am starting to know how to do it.

I remove C&Q in the BIOS. Here is what I'm doing

-Cranked up the FSB to 240.
-Limited HT to 8x -> 1920.
-Limited NB to 9x -*> 2160
-Put DDR2 800 to 333 and put the original timings 6-6-6-18-24. The results is a stock 400MHz.

To gain stability, I put LLC to 12% and I crank up the Vcore to 1.425

Now is what happens: CPUZ confirms the numbers. Prime95 works fine and temperatures reach the mid 50s. But then, the CPU multiplier drops by half to 6.25 and back up.

What is that?

Please help?

Additions:

-Does anyone know how to setup the AAC properly? with unleashed?
-Retrying that overclock, I had a blue screen. Any clue to why?

Thanks in advance for helping out!

Could the reduction of the multiplier be related to the mobo TDP, which is 125W, same as the CPU?

Do I have an overhead there?

Well, you are overclocking a 125W TDP processor on a 4+1 power phase with no heatsinks and due to your tower cooler, has no cooling whatsoever. If the motherboard is forcing your multiplier down, it is doing right. You sir are in grave, grave danger just by overclocking your CPU. With 125W+ TDP processors and unheatsinked 4+1 power phase there is a huge fire risk associated. You should down the clocks to stock, or maybe less, until you can get a better motherboard with 8+2 mosfets or some sort of mosfet cooling (i.e. a heatsink).

Lemme guess: you got the parts from TigerDirect/CompUSA? They're also having deals on that old 9850. The 9850 is not exactly a highly overclockable chip. In fact, hitting 3GHz stable on that thing is pretty good. I would advise AGAINST the use of LLC since the board isn't exactly cut out for overclocking and this may put excessive stress on the CPU power phases. The CPU multi dropping back, even with CnQ off, may be the board's attempt at thermal throttling.

Yeah TigerDirect it is. The chip was 58CAD, best CPUmark/cost ratio on the market.

It all started as a HTPC and ended up to be a little more. But nut that much more it appears. I am impressed by your knowledge guys. Thanks for the information. I'll bury the overclocking idea until I upgrade.

Speaking of upgrade: Any proper sub250 mobo/CPU combo I could get. I intend to sell that computer to a friend of mine and build a new one with a GTX 460/470.

Trying to get the best performance for the money, should I go for DDR3 compatible mobo. Would AM3 be the wise choice? 8+2?

Yes... but that is an AM2+ CPU only, so sadly it will not work with AM3.
