570 vs 580 for 3d?

Thread Starter
i'm jumping ship and going green. i'm not a fanboy by any stretch of the imagination but my last 3 graphics cards have been ati. last year i bought a 65" mitsubishi DLP 3d rdy tv, hooked my pc to it, and have been using it as my monitor since. i love it.

this year i decided it's time to move past 3d ready and actually go full on 3d. a friend of mine had an nvidia 3d set with the glasses about 5yrs ago and i played a couple shooters on it for a little while and it rocked. i liked it so much i've always wanted it for my own and just haven't gotten around to buying the necessary hardware to do it.

i was planning on getting stuff around feb but thanks to an unexpected year end bonus from work (yay!) i'll be ordering on 12/31. assuming what i decide on is in stock ...

i decided to go nvidia for this because according to everything i've read they have a much MUCH more user friendly solution for their 3d. ati's requires 3rd party drivers that aren't free and are even flagged as cheating by some online games (was reading multiple issues on iz3d's website, one of the companies that ati recommends buying a 3d driver from).

so i know i'm going to be buying the nvidia 3d kit, and i know i'll be getting a gtx 570 or gtx 580. my question is how much of an impact does running in 3d have? i remember when i tried it on my buddies system the 3d was amazing, and it was still playable, but it did take a noticeable performance hit with 3d enabled vs standard 2d.

has anyone here had any experience with nvidia's 3d lately? how about specifically with the 570 or 580? i'll be using 1920x1080 as my res. if i replace this tv it would be with a full on projector but that would still be 1920x1080.

right now i'm more leaning towards the evga gtx 580 if that matters to anyone.

thanks in advance for any insights anyone has to offer.

I agree with that.

For 3D, you are looking at wanting as much FPS as you can, trying to reach 120 FPS normal mode, in order to get the clean 60 FPS in 3D.

I think you should get the 570 in sli, then you can run 3d surround.

While I am not a fan of 3d, AMD really has the crappiest 3d solution of all. Relying on 3rd party support with no first party support? That is a quick way to go nowhere fast.

Anyway, its simple, if you can afford it and don't mind spending the big bucks for the best performance get the gtx580.

If you don't want to blow the bank on your gpu than you can safely get a gtx570 and know that your performance will be good enough. In very few instances will a gtx580 make a 3d game playable when a gtx570 is not. Very few.

My 470 does around 50-60fps in 3d, some games are in the lower 50's some in the higher and some at a solid 60, can't use AA though as that really affects the performance.
This is all at a core oc @ 800mhz.
470 is'nt really enough for awsome 3d at 1080p, would love to know what the 570 is like with a oc as by time i need to upgrade i'm hoping the 570/580 will be sub £200, just can't justify another upgrade yet.
I got the most with teh money i had, i'd suggest you do the same as you really do need alot of performance with 3d.
