Overclocking i7 and Turbo-Boosting

Thread Starter
So bassically I like to see how far I can push my hardware and I want to overclock my Intel i7 870 @2.93GHz to something around 3.2 - 3.4GHz but Im worried that in overclocking I will loose the Turbo-Boost feature.

I have a new ASUS P7P55D-E PRO motherboard with a strange BIOS which gives me 3 quick and easy overclock options of 3.0GHz 3.2GHz and 3.5GHz, when I leave it on default [2.93GHz] I have the option to enable/disable Turbo-Boosting but with all of the other quick overclock options the option to enable/disable Turbo-Boosting goes away...

...does this mean that my CPU will no longer turbo-boost or does it just mean that I dont have the option to disable it?

Yeah I was thinking that, but I dont think I can go as high as 4GHz seing as how my PC is only air cooled and I so ill probably aim for 3.6GHz... thanks =]

Just see how far you can go smile.gif

Better then setting a target mhz: set a target temperature you want to stay under.

70 degrees is a nice number indeed.
Keep in mind that a stress test like prim95 of OCCT stresses the CPU in a way normal usage never does.
So if you keep 70 a max when stresstested, your pc should be even cooler when using normal.

What do you intend to use your comp for? I ask because if it is mostly gaming and nothing that uses hyperthreading than you can switch that off and lower your temperatures a bit.

From the comparison benchmarks I've seen, hyperthreading can actually negatively impact gaming performance and only help if a program is designed to utilize it.

It's worth considering if your temperatures are in question.

If you can stay under 70 you'll be sitting pretty

Thanks everyone for all of your advice, I'm currently at 4.01GHz stable with and idle temp of 38°C and a 100% stressed temp of 73°C, never thought I would get to 4GHz...
thnx all ^^

...btw I dont know alot about voltage but does 1.35v sound too high for the CPU cos ive notcied that all of you guys have your voltage in the high 1.2 area???
