dell enterprise/storage support is pretty good... consumer desktop on the other hand... LOL

sorry to hear. They usually wont replace much easily without a failed dell diagnostic.

This is the stuff I am getting from bcdedit and bootrec
Code:
Bcdedit /export C:\BCD_Backup
The store export operation has failed
The system cannot find the file specified

ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old
The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process

Bootrec /rebuildbcd
Acanning all disks for Windows installations.

Please wait, since this may take a while...

You may want to invest in a usb to sata/ide and try to get your files off the HDD.

While in UBCD did you scan for viruses?

You can try this:

Had same issue today as many, attempted repair using vista disk but OS was detected, but clicked next anyway and the process started, and to my surprise it made a successful repair, while it rebooted a few times, from doing some research i found out that it doesn't always work but there is a way around that also, select install instead of repair and it will detect your drive, select cancel and go back to the repair section, your OS will show up now.

http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk

Read the documentation, I've used it to repair bad boot sectors from my RAID array after it crashes (heat related, the UD3P dumps the partition but its recoverable).

After reading the site on how to use it, pretty much you run it, it'll find the boot sector, repair the boot sector, restart and there's windows.

Hope that works!

ok you formatted and tried to install windows 7, it failed on the install for some reason, it probably wiped the drive clean, that's why it can not find the boot record. sounds like your going to have to stick a OS disc back in, reformat, and reinstall the OS. if win 7 wont work right then try the vista you found for it. but one of them should install.

if neither will install then put the hard drive into your computer and try to install on it that way, if it works then you know the drive is not the issue, look at other components.

I am afraid that it was reformatted to put windows 7 on it

Holy crap!!!!! Sorry I missed this and wasted all this time frown.gif Just put the Vista cd in and see if it will install if it does then after it's done, put in the win7 disk and install a fresh copy.

Well I installed W7 on it months ago so nothing went wrong with the installation, sorry for the confusion. I think I will try testdisk to see what it can find but if that does not solve the problem I will just give up and reinstall windows after backing up all the data
