Radiator suggestions

Thread Starter
I am building an external Watercooling box as mentioned here:
http://www.overclock.net/water-cooli...ng-system.html

I would like some suggestions for radiators. I don't want them to be overly thick, and I am planning to use GentleTyphoon AP-14's, but have enough room available to scale to 38mm in the future should added cooling be neccessary.

So I'm looking for something space efficient, ok for use with AP-14's (push with shroud), but also scalable to better performance with better fans. Size is 2x120mm.

Two radiators I am considering are the Black Ice GTS 240 and the XSPC RS240. What do you guys think? Is one definitively better than the other? Are either of them trash? Or would I be fine with either of them?

The GTS 240 has an advantage in being thinner, which can let me shrink the size of the box slightly. But if it is much worse in performance, I'll take the size penalty for the RS240.

The pump I am using is the Swiftech MCP655-B.

Both radiators that you mentioned are from reputable manufacturers and both perform well.

I'm kinda biased toward Black Ice (HW Labs) as I have owned numerous radiators from them and they have all been stellar performers.

The only caveat that I can think of when it comes to the Black Ice radiators is that the fins are quite delicate, but one would hope that such a point would be moot when these units are handled with care.

Personally I would get the RS240. It has a much lower FPI than the GT Stealth and thus it will be much more suitable for the low speed fans you plan on using.

RS240: 13 FPI
GT Stealth: 30 FPI

Thanks for the response. But how well does the lower FPI scale with higher performance fans? I made sure to size the enclosure to accommodate 38mm fans as well should the cooling require an upgrade in the future.

How impotent would the typhoons really be on the gts240? Any stats available? I haven't been able to find much info.

Here's the statistics for a 10C Delta:

And a 5C Delta:

Look at the RX360. It also has a low-FPI count (similar to the RS240) and performs consistently better at a lower fan speed than other radiators whereas a radiator with a higher FPI isn't really worth using at speeds lower than ~1700-2000 RPM.

They would still perform yet not perform as well as a low-FPI radiator. If your objective is to lower the sound levels, a low-FPI radiator really is your best option. In this case, the RS240.

Thanks for the data. How does radiator thickness come into play with the data? Because the Black Ice GTS series is far thinner than most of those, so does that make a difference? Many of those radiators are >60mm, as opposed to the <30mm of the GTS.

Radiator thickness only matters with higher speed fans, as with low speed the air is already saturated with heat before reaching farther into the radiator.

Thanks for the help everyone. I ordered two RS240's. One of the factors that sealed the deal for me was something that didn't come up in the discussion. The GTS240 was extremely more restrictive to flow than the RS240. Considering that I am using two radiators, that restriction would have been considerable.
