Im a HUGE Fallout fan since the original! and FO3 was the best, Vegas' story was a major let down, the rep feature was disapointing also.
Fallout 3 was by far the better game overall - the quests the characters just everything.
I'd say go and grab FO3 and play through it you wont regret it!
I agree ... I much preferred FO3 to NV. The only thing better about NV in my book is that you have a lot more control over the outcome, it's a more 'branched' main story which is pretty cool. However, there's WAY more creativity to the side quests in FO3, whereas NV just had mostly Fed-Ex sidequests.
Mostly I ended up 'caring' a lot more about what was going on in the game world in FO3. NV I feel like I have to try to make myself care ... I've been playing for a couple months now, still haven't finished. Eventually I will, but ... meh ... it's just hard to give a crap about the fate of Hoover Dam.
Brotherhood of Steel and Point Lookout are really good DLC's as well
The Pitt is decent, but the other two (Anchorage and esp. Zeta) are kinda boring.
