Please do report. I guess I'll keep it, I hate the extra noise of more cooling in my case anyway.

Just remember, the 480 backplate didn't have the new dumb cutout around the core, and NOT coincidentally the 480 backplate worked.

Does the 480 backplate fit on the 500 series? That may be the way to go.
Otherwise, eVGA will need to unf*** this new revision.
(excuse my french)

note: my backplate finally is idling at the stock idle. Take at least 3 times as long to cool down to idle? Darn thing just traps heat.

Yep, Tac.
The problem is external cooling does not help the backplate heatsoak, but overall cooling does help GPU cooling without the plate.

I am also happy for some reason that you are a dog in your Av.

...So yes, in light of all my tests, th eVGA backplate does not raise temps, but it does hold heat longer and keeps airflow away from the back of your card thus causing fluctuating idle.

She passed away ealier this year , but thought I'd add it on so I get to see it more often .

Anyway, that sucks the backplate didn't help, but at least you got your hands on that Sparkle, seems like a pretty bad ass card! Wish stock cooling for the 580 was a tad better (can't complain though), I want to push mine some more but I don't need any extra heat lol.

well i know when i got the backplates for my 480s... i wasn't looking for better temps (they are already really GOOD)....

i was looking to make the card stronger with the AXP cooler on it

I understand that not only you but many folks vouch for the 480 backplate. The solid backing behind the core on the GPU must be the reason. While the backplate does make the PCB more stable, I'm sick and tired of installing and uninstalling this thing.
In the best case scenario, it only hurt my idle temps and noticeably hurt temps by blocking better airflow upgrades in the case.

Ambient temps must have changed, now getting the same results without the backplate.

Boy I'm getting sick of this.
So OK, maybe the backplate just sucks if you have good PCI cooling, and is the SAME as normal if you don't.

gonna' reinstall the backplate again for the umpteenth time to compare...
