does this sub REALLY do 20 htz out of the box?!?!?

Thread Starter
really, i do want to know, badly. i already have some bx5a's which would work PERFECT with this thing. does it go down to 20 htz right out of the box?

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...10_Active.html

at that price, with those specs and how good my bx5a's already sound, i don't thing its possible to beat that quality to price ratio. i'm pretty sure iv'e completely solved my sub problem there. i saw it on maudio site and dismissed it because $500 is too much for me to pay for a sub at the moment.

anyone mind telling me if it will actually go under 20 htz if it really tries as well? im doubting it even goes 20 htz. thats insane for a sub that price, that little ammount of wattage and that small.

edit: is that site reliable?

I have no idea about the speaker but B&H is totally reliable. I've been to their store in NY and have done business with them in the past.

20hz is more felt than heard really. at that low of frequency it becomes more so pressure waves. Any sub will do it, but at what volume and with how little distortion should be question at hand..

i already know the human ear bottoms out at 20 htz. i really just want a sub that can go AT 20 htz or lower, lower is not a must but a bonus.

The SBX10 has an improved crossover circuit that eliminates unwanted frequencies in the midrange from the subs operating range. The BX10 had an error in design that allowed the unwanted 200hz-250hz access.

The SBX10 subwoofer owner manual / sales specifications are incomplete or deceptive ?
The specifications are written with ommisions that should be addressed.
The Frequency response is listed as (-3db) . This is meaningless without a (+db) to establish the range of error. Example: (-3db, +15db) would be very poor whereas (-3db, +0db) would be good but not perfect.
The SBX10 THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) is listed as 0.019%. This is obviously not including the speaker and can only be left to the assumption that it is measured at the internal amp output. A good THD for the unit would be 5%. However in it's price range up to 10% would be expected. Though this could even be low if M-Audio is afraid to post it .
The unit is rated at 240 watts into 4 ohms. Seems like it's predecessor the BX10 was rated 240 watts into 8 ohms. Mathmatically the new SBX10 is approximately 30% less powerful but is "coincidentally" labled with the same wattage. All I want is good honest complete specs from M-Audio who figured out how to put a heavier magnet in a speaker cabinet that weighs less than it's BX10 and lowered the power to achieve "better audio" through a 4 ohm speaker.
that distortion number has to be bullcrap.

I would put $ on the fact that you would get better output, clarity, and frequency response from this : http://www.parts-express.com/pe/show...number=303-436

Its a 12'' with a ~500W bash amp. Good parts all around, and its cheaper. Like i said, any SUBwoofer will do 20hz, its how much spl at said frequency is what madders.

i'm looking for SQ (sound quality) more than spl and want it to have at least enough power to feel 20 htz or less, and still be audiable. i do not require my sub to break my windows. i want real sound quality more than anything else, with that being said... you really think the BIC is that much better?

also, it's hard to beat the convenience of the sbx10 when i can plug my bx5a's into it with xrl plugs and operate even in true surround sound out of the box from the sub itself. i trust m audio as a company after hearing my bx5a's hooked up to my friend's $1000 musical fidelity cd player and hearing jack johnson on it; i was able to detect the flaws in the music and hear the inconsistencies of the drumstick tips hitting the cymbals. that impressed me alot for paying $190 for a pair of bookshelves. not only that but the bass is very detailed and punchy enough on these not to really NEED a sub, but i'm picky.

i'd like a couple more opinions on this, because i'm kinda sketched out by the BIC sub.

uhh, i wouldnt EVER crossover this sub past 80 htz, none the less thousands more lol.

and if you meant 20 htz... was that a real number or a hyperbole? i'm tired of spec sheets lying to my face. like i said, i'm not looking for 165 db SPL out of 20 htz to break my house. i want enough to hear 21+ htz at an audiable level and feel it from 10-20 ft away. that is my requirement.

It may well be a good sub but I really doubt it goes to 20Hz.
