SAS Controller?

Thread Starter
Is there any good cheap SAS controller, so i can use this cable and connect 4 of my disks?

I dont need RAID, just AHCI, so i can hot plug them.

for cheap your only real option is eBay for server pulls. But that is a great way of getting great controllers for much less than their retail value.

If all you want is an HBA, look for an HP SC44Ge (4 internal, 4 external ports) or SC40Ge (4 internal), or a Dell SAS 5/iR (4 internal ports) or SAS 6/iR (8 internal ports). The Dell PERC 5/i and PERC 6/i RAID cards also use that same multilane connector for 8 drives each, but cost more. You should be able to grab one of the HBAs for less than $30 if you look round and are patient, the PERCs are $120 or so - but be careful that you aren't paying PERC money for the HBAs, as often they are mislabled...

Thank You for your answer. I looked all of these up on eBay but only some used makes go around 100 and possible little lees or more, which makes it expensive.

What I want is to have an additional 4 sata slots on my system, i dont care for RAID or anything, just AHCI as i said. But this looks like an expensive option.

These are the cheapest ones i've found but sill expensive.

http://cgi.ebay.com/HP-SC44GE-SAS344...item5adb18ebcc

http://cgi.ebay.com/HP-COMPAQ-SC40GE...item27b36f452d

http://cgi.ebay.com/DELL-GU186-UCS-5...item4155684f97

Should i just focus on a sata controller? I have seen some cheapies on eBay but they seem of really low quality. Adaptec/3Ware/RocketRAID still go something near a 100.

My situation is this.

I have 2 SSD's RAID 0, 4 internal HDD's for storage. This concludes me 6 sata 3 ports on mobo. I also have 2x sataII ports which are for the case eSata and possibly an eSata Optical Drive. So that leaves me wanting an additional 4 ports, for a hot-swappable 4-Bay Drive i have installed.

What would be my best bet here?

SATA supports AHCI...

Why do you need a SAS controller exactly?

Hi Duckie, just posted specific information on my post above. It would just be more convenient since this cable will leave a lesser mess. It's more straightforward and it doesnt require using seperate cables all-around. As i said i could even go for a 4-port sata controller if it's significantly cheaper.

I wouldn't spend extra on a SAS controller and cables just for cable management. In fact, there is not much gain there since on the plug is unified.

What do you mean? One end is unified the other has 4 sata and it's all in one nice straightforward cable. What wrong is there besides possible price and value for money?

Alternatively are there any sata controllers, you would like to recommend?

My preferences are

-4 sataII ports, 2+2 on same side (dont like cards where they have 2 on the side and 2 on the front)

-And AHCI support.

It's not one "one nice straightforward cable" though. It is one SFF-8484 plug, 4xcables, and 4xSFF-8482 plugs.

Here is a 4-port SATA controller but the plug step up does not meet your preference. However, who cares? Just use zip ties or sleeving for cable management. Otherwise, you are looking at $40 more for nice cabling.

I think you need to practice your eBaying a little...

$50 HP SC40Ge
$29 Dell SAS 5/iR
$25 Dell SAS 6/iR (although an auction,so may go higher)

30 seconds work - and I'm sure you could do better with a little work. I bought my SC40Ge for $26 shipped. I even snagged a PERC 6/i for $15. Just takes a little patience...

I agree with Duckie about the cabling though - it is actually harder to do decent cable management with SAS cables, since you have very little choice about the length etc. And they are pretty much identical in use 2 4 separate cables, since only the connector is a single piece, and all the cables are separate.

Did i mention i'm from Europe and this items are US-only? I order my items based on price+shipping lowest based on my Location, and the ones i suggested are the cheapest i can get. Which are actually not cheap at all.

These are possibly the best i can get.

http://cgi.ebay.com/Highpoint-SATA-R...item4cf3455efe

Shall i get one of these?
