what happens when totl power draw exceeds psu rating?

Thread Starter
Ive been reading up on the system power draw of sli 460s, when overclocked around the 900Mhz range the total system can draw over 650w apparently, which is what my power supply is rated at, and ive got 460 hawks arriving tomorrow. So what actually happenes when the power draw exceeds the psu rating? will my xfx 650w black edition hold out? or will it blow my ring out and ruin my parts? Im not gong to overclock them untill Im sure its ok.......or I get a new psu down the line

Sorry if this has been answered before and any comments are greatly appriciated

650w!?
Got a link to that?

Anyway, the psu would shut off.
But you're looking at extreme case scenarios, I don't see you reaching 650w during everyday use with moderate overclocks.

Typically a computer will freeze, reboot or just shut off as the current draw exceeds that supplied from the PSU. A decent PSU will be able to withstand it occurring, but lower end/quality units may bite the dust if tested.

Total system draw with an overclocked Intel quad? I'd be inclined to believe it was possible.

I had a situation like this. I heard a "POP" and then all the screens and lights went out. I would upgrade the PSU before smoke would arise.

Its a great read and explains everything about the hawks, allbeit they just max out the voltages in afterburner - is that ok? , I mean thats what the hawks are designed for right??

Thanks for the info guys, I know nothing about overclocking nvidia cards so ive been searching everywhere to see what the hawks will allow me to do etc, and how to try hitting 1GHz on the core - (or as close to as possible lol!)

Towards the end of the article they show the total powerdaw taken from benchmarking on vantage, and they go on to say that at times the powerdraw would creep 10% higher, hence over the 650w mark.

I think ill just keep them stock for a while, they should smoke current games anyhow, I dont think it would be worth it considering things can go POP lol.

ill have a read at your link hometoast cheers again guys

The 650W power draw is from the wall... you need to factor in your power supply's efficiency. If it were drawing 650W from the PSU, then it would be drawing over 800W from the wall (assuming 80% efficiency -- your PSU does better than 80% so it would be drawing less from the wall). If it's drawing 650W from the wall, then it's drawing ~520W from the PSU (still assuming 80% efficiency).
A 650W power draw from the PSU is NOT happening with two overclocked GTX 460s. Your PSU is perfectly fine.

Well if its a cheap PSU... BOOOM

thanks for your input but I think your mistaken, the manufacturer could not market a power supply as supplying 650w, or any wattage, if it didnt. What the 80% efficiency means is that the power supply provides 650w while being 80% efficient, meaning that when providing 650w, its wasting energy at a rate of 20%. Meaning that its really drawing 20% extra from the wall, being 130w extra, totalling 780w.

I read that a few months ago while reading a psu review article from a reputable site, just cant think where it was now .

Im confident the psu would handle the setup, just not with a heavy overclock through overvolting the cards, ill probable see what I get on the stock voltage.

Somebody correct me if Im wrong lol
