Each data path is serial. The old PCI bus was parallel and could be readily sapped of bandwidth. It seems I was incorrect about the power routing though.

There's absolutely no ripple protection. It'd all come down to the 12V lines of your PSU.

Useful for people with lots of high power use PCI-E cards. For everyone else? Pointless.
And it will work, +12v line is +12v line, even if it's on the PCI-E connector, it's not doing anything with the data lines, it's saving your 24pin from melting when you put that extra GPU in the system.

Edit: And who needs ripple suppression on this thing, it's why you bought a decent PSU isn't it?

This might be useful if I set up a folding farm using GT430s or other models that only draw power from the PCIE lanes... It would make me feel more safe anyway

Are you implying that the video cards currently draw the full 75W from the slot, then use the PCIe connectors to get the remainder? I imagine it would make more sense to balance the load across the available inputs instead.

To me the whole thing reeks of a design flaw in the PCIe specification. I imagine that when purposefully designing a bus to replace all, they'd imagine that a motherboard could be filled with 7 devices all drawing power through a single pin leading into the motherboard. They should have immediately paused right there and specified the aux inputs that so many motherboards had to add later down the road.
