[ENG] MS: over 1.5 million Windows Phone 7 devices sold to carriers and retailers

Instead of giving us the juicy number of actual devices sold to end users, the Redmond crew has provided a neatly rounded figure of 1.5 million sales to mobile operators and retailers. That tells us that the mobile industry is cautiously buying into Microsoft's new OS, and it'd be foolish not to, but it doesn't really educate us on the relative success of the platform's launch -- 1.5 million units is a tiny, tiny number when you consider the platform launched on 10 devices on over 60 carriers in over 30 countries.

A pretty rough start to say the least.

It's a pretty rough market, and the carriers aren't doing a whole lot to market them around here at least. The market is saturated with iPhones / Droids / RIM already -- a lot of which are definitely not willing to pay due to recent contracts. I'm pretty surprised they've even sold that many to carriers given the market conditions.

yeah, i notice most people aren't really pushing WP7. it's only AT&T and Microsoft themselves whose ads i see

i still want to see if they will support it or leave it to rot like they did with Windows Mobile Classic.

Perhaps it's because of the god-awful UI?
Sorry, I would love to own a WM phone, but with the current UI having billboards all over my screen, there's not a chance in hell.

I like the look of the W7 phone. I already have an EVO though and Droid is just fine. If I was in the market for a new phone I might just go W7... would have to test first though.

I think that this is a large part of the low-ish numbers. Verizon is huge in the US so I'm sure the number will largely increase once they launch WP7.

Weird...how is it different than icons all over an iPhone or Android screen?

I agree, it's not particular to my taste, but I feel it's kind of a easy way for people to get into smartphones if they haven't already.

WP7 has no SD card slot and no multi-tasking. In that sense even a Win Mo 6.x is better and those OS's are pretty awful.

Uh, that's not true. It has a microSD slot. You just can't swap willy-nilly, you need to use their cards. You can upgrade to up to 32gb, iirc.

If you pull out the microSD, though, itll erase everything on your phone. It was something they had to do to meet DoD guidelines (so I am told).

I have a friend who works at Microsoft. He showed me his WP7 (HD7) and it was actually really nice. I like it because it would integrate with my Zune pass, and allow me to retire my zune.
