Help: Routine freezes in Windows 7 64-bit

Situation:

So most of the time when I turn on my computer it freezes (hard locks) in windows just after the desktop comes on the screen. With enough rebooting, it will eventually open without freezing.

Also, when I do get the desktop successfully, if I try to run MSI Afterburner it hard locks. Occasionally however, I can open Afterburner without it freezing.

I thought it might be an unstable overclock, but I have been running stock voltage and timings all day and it is still happening.

Possible causes:

My friend thinks that it could be my soundcard for some reason, since the Audigy 2 has obscure old drivers that predate windows 7 and 64 bit OS?

I have been running the 260.99 XTreme-G drivers for my gtx460, maybe I should try normal Nvidia Drivers or even role back to older drivers?

I have DisplayFusion, Steam, AVG, Logitech Setpoint, and Logitech Profiler all set to load at windows startup, maybe one of these programs is the issue?

See my sig rig for system specs (note: I am currently running no overclock on my system).

Any ideas one what could be the issue would be very appreciated, thanks in advance.

First off take out all accessories that you think could be the problem. Also how new is the windows install?

could be amd not liking ur nvidia cards (devil.gif).

in all seriousness start pulling parts u think could cause a problem and boot with it. boot with the min possible parts to boot ur comp. lmk what happens.

You mean hardware specifically right? Like pull out my soundcard, as that is the only non-essential component I have?

Another thing I forgot to mention is that it never freezes when booting into safe mode, that is why I think it is a driver or software issue and not hardware

If it boots into safemode its probably hardware related. Boot into safe mode and uninstall the drivers u think are causing the problems. Do each driver one at a time. meaning uninstall reboot see if it boots. Do this till u can boot normally or have exhausted all the drivers u can try.

not only uninstall from device manager but use a driver sweeping tool such as this. http://downloads.guru3d.com/Guru3D---Driver-Sweeper-%28Setup%29-download-1655.html

Okay I'm 99% certain it was the soundcard...guess I should have listened to my friend about this weeks ago. Three consecutive reboots, able to open MSI afterburner every time, no freezes.

I'll post in this thread if it starts again, but so far so good smile.gif

removing the card fixed it instantly. I did use that program you linked to removed all its drivers too.

try putting the card back and boot (without installing any drivers previously ofc). If the comp boots then get the proper drivers and u should be good. I think it was driver related which shouldnt be a problem if u can find the right driver for it.
