955 temp questions

Thread Starter
I installed a PII X4 955 on a M4A88T-V EVO this weekend. Running stock clocks @ 1.35v (mobo auto set it at 1.4v). Ambient temp is 24-25C. I have reseated my cooler (Xigmatek S963 with Xigmatek PTI-G3606 TIM) about four times but temps remain around the same. I know my cooler is not the best but I was expecting a little lower.

I fill in the cracks and then do the two lines in between the heatpipes. I also have tried the small blob in the middle of the cpu (which actually seems to work slightly better i think). But overall it idles around ~38-40C and ~51C at load (fan at 100%). I'm using 70% rubbing alcohol and coffee filters each time to reapply.

I know load temp is what counts but is it normal for the idle and load to be so close together?

Also when starting up from a cold boot it will idle around 37-38, but then when I run p95 for example it will go up to around 51, but then when it goes back down to idle, it will stay around 40c. is this normal? I guess I'm used to my E5400 running at 43C (core 1) 30C (core 2) basically every moment except when put on full load or gaming.

Also, is it true that you can OC a decent amount (~3.7GHz) on stock volts and that tmeps won't rise that much until you start pumping more voltage in?

And lastly, I used to using speedfan and realtemp but my board doesn't seem to work with speedfan and realtemp doesn't support my cpu so i'm using asus's fan xpert which is surprisingly good anf coretemp but coretemp's temp reading is usually about 2-3C higher than asus's fan xpert utlitity (which includes monitoring). Any other fan controllers/temp readers that you recommend?

I'm just used to working with intel so amd is all new to me.

Thanks

Those temps seem fine for me, remember less is more when you are talking TIM. As for temp programs everything is going to give you a different reading.

tried seating in one last time with the line method. 39 idle and 49-50 load. i guess that's the best i'll get.

everyone links to this image all the time which looks like it's way too much but the picture looks so magnified and rendered that i can't actually tell how much it is in real life.

This is at stock clock/voltage? if so, thats a rather high idle and load temp akin to what you would see with a reference (stock) BE cooler. What are your case temps? Is cool and quiet enabled and confirmed to be working? What core voltage reading do you get in cpuid?

I have encountered that sort of idle temp 'drift', so I would consider it normal.

Yes, for some people with 9x5's with good cooling 3.7ghz on stock volts is easy. My 965 did it no problem. The clock rate increase won't make a measurable difference in heat, but as you increase the voltage the temps will climb. You can see the interaction for yourself by increasing core voltage during a P95 run and watching the corresponding increase in core temp.

clocks are stock and i have it undervolted @ 1.32v set in the bios. cpuz reads 1.308 (vdrop) and under load 1.284 (vdroop) voltage are at stock. CnQ is disabled b.c i am planning to OC not sure about case temp but i have decent airflow. 120mm intake and 80mm exhaust. both fans are level with the heatsink in height so they are pushing air through it as well as the cpu fan. the heatsink doesn't really feel that warm at idle though so i'm not sure if the heatpipes are transferring heat that well, but the heatsink does heatup during load and temps only go up a few degrees from idle to load, so i'm wondering if this chip just idles high?

I think it is the chip tbh.

Using Arctic Freezer Pro rev.2 i was getting above 60c under load at times and 35c-40c idle. Had to undervolt it to 1.2v at stock speeds and even then it only dropped to 55c under load and 32c on idle.

With my H50 i'm getting 24c on idle and 38c on P95 and 36c gaming @ 1.2v and about a 5c increase across the board when running @ 1.4v.

The Xigmatek S963 is probably not much better than stock.
Make sure you clean the residual TIM from the grooves using a blade or pin. Your case cooling is minimal at best. Compare your temps with the case lid off verses on. You may be able to add fans using 3M double sided tape or by some other method. I added a 92mm exhaust and a 120mm intake using tape and an AMD fan using Erector Set hardware: http://hwbot.org/signature.img?iid=4...se&iehack=.jpg

i've tried with the side panel off. pretty much the same temps. maybe 1 degree higher.

i just tried the spread method (plastic bag over finger) that everyone says is bad because of possible air bubbles. covered the whole cpu with a thin layer and nothing on heatsink. to my surprise, temps went down. idles at a constant 36 now and 47 at load.
