[solved]Failing gtx480 or psu?

Lately i've been having hard lock ups ingame (video goes out, then no signal). When I reboot however sometimes I get no signal.

The crashing occurs ingame whether I'm running OCD or stock.

Checking out the mobo LED codes the pc itself is booting fine and I can get into windows (hear the login sound), but there's just no video.

The way I fix it after a game pc crash is by swapping the two power cables going into the gpu, and that usually seems to fix it.

There have been no artifacts gamewise however, and no artifacts on dos boot.
I got this PSU in aug 2007 so it's over 3 years old now.

Well neither of them SHOULD be failing, are you doing any overclocking/overvolting (if your overvolting it may have stuffed something up)? It may not be either of them, your system might not be stable...

If neither... have you tried reinstalling drivers e.t.c., reinstalling the game or lowering graphics?
could also be a driver problem...

like when I suffered from that problem, wasn't really driver problem, but other software were conflicting with the drivers...

troubleshot the software first... uninstall stuff, and reinstall them

btw, in my case, I had installed daemon tools, it was what caused my troubles

Daemon tools caused a lot of problems for me too. I was getting hard lockups all the time until I uninstalled it.

Yeah I tried uninstalling the drivers and driver sweeper but that doesn't seem to help. The thing is the no signal occurs when the pc boots even before it gets to windows. I just see blank. When OCd i ran it at 1.38 volts at 800/1600/2000, but then I also ran it stock. Last time I had crashes I was playing for about 30 mins, had the crash, rebooted played again, crashed 15 mins later, rebooted played again and crashed about 5 minutes later.

Btw anyone know how to pull the vrm heatsink things? They seem to be pretty on there. I'm gonna try ordering a Thermalright VRM-G2 as I think the vrm might be overheating.

Went out and bought a tx850, now no more crashes even when ocd. Also the psu case stays cool (the 620hx case got really hot). Looks like the little 620 couldn't handle it anymore. Thanks everyone, rep for all.

A lot of people don't realize just how much power the GF100-based cards draw, it's pretty ridiculous.

Look at this page of the MSI GTX480 Lightning review. It shows you comparable power consumption figures from other cards as well as a stock 480.

http://www.techreaction.net/2010/12/24/review-msi-n480gtx-lightning/6/

Keep in mind these power figures are from the wall, but still.

A 240 watt increase in power usage from overvolting and overclocking...

What. the. ****. That certainly explains why overvolting my 470s trips my 1,000 watt power supply.
