Which GPU.. 6870 vs 6950 vs GTX570 - Page 2

I suggest HD6870 for the 3 reasons listed below:

1) As the budget of your 24'' monitor (1920x1080) depends on the cost of the card, I would swift more fund to the monitor as it will stay much longer with you than any graphic card will. And, 6870 is the cheapest of the 3. This is the paramount reason.

2) HD6950 has 2GB Vram and even though your OS is 64-bit which allows you to fully utilize the 4GB system ram, nevertheless 2GB Vram (vs 1GB of 6870 and 1.3GB of 570) might map too much into system memory for address and therefore gives you less system ram to use. This might not be a problematic, depending on how you use your system ram but you should keep this in mind.

3) Your mobo cannot do SLI. Therefore, when the time comes for more graphic power, you need/can go Crossfire. So, AMD has the advantage here.
A single 6870 should give more than 50 fps at 1920x1080 except in the few games like Crysis and Metro 2033. So, you have to accept this fact.

Thread Starter

I sold the 4870 in lieu of the delayed 6950 drop in early November. I have been running a 64MB ATi x300 in the meantime.

My budget is not to exceed $600 for monitor and GPU.

This is what I was ultimately thinking.

Monitor: Asus VE248H Black 24"

GPU: ASUS GeForce GTX 570

GTX570 grabs my vote. They seem to OC well enough, and are beastly cards, plus they fold very well! Im more than happy with my 470, so the 570 is all the better!

The GTX570 is not worth $50 more than the 6950 IMHO.
The performance difference is around 10%

In other words, not a big enough difference to make one game playable on one card but not the other.

How well do the 6950's overclock?
I had a couple games with driver issues with my Radeons but so far so good with these 263.09's.
Love all my GPU's just saying.

Amazing min FPS with these 320bit GF-110's.

Not sure yet. Right now they are limited to 840Mhz by CCC.

6970's easily hit the 950Mhz limit imposed by CCC, so I suspect the 6900's will have no trouble going over 1Ghz once OC-ing programs like Afterburner get full support for the 6900's.

I am just wondering why on all the reviews, the max overclock possible is 950MHz? Will new drivers fix this? I mean I think the 6970 has the potential to go to the 1GHz mark, IMO.

I still feel really compelled as to which card to buy. I think the 6950 is held back by crap drivers. I guess the extra $50 for the GTX 570 is best considered by the quality for the drivers you get. I don't care what sort of fanboy you are... Nvidia drivers drag AMD drivers through the mud.

You really have to tell us what games you play. These cards are all so close in overall performance, you have to take multiple factors into account: rez, tesselation of games, processor intensive games, overclockability. Nvidia will generally perform better at 19x12 or 19x10, while AMD has the memory for multiple screens on a single card.
