I'm going to need to get a new cpu cooler aren't I? (First time overclocking)

Thread Starter
Tonight I tried to overclock my Q9450 for the first time. I only have the stock cooler so I wasn't sure how well this would go. I set the Clock to 3.0GHz and ran the Prime 95 stress test while I had CPU-Z and HMonitor open. My temps at idle were 50 Degrees C and while running the stress test the temperatures kept climbing, once one of my cores went up to 73 Degrees I shut off Prime 95 just in case. These temperatures are too high correct?
core 2 quads can go up past 80c and still be fine, the tjmax is 100c

but for 24/7 usage, i would not go past 70c.

get yourself a nice aftermarket cooler. xigmatek dark knight is a nice cooler for the core 2 quads. my Q9550 at my sig overclock dosent go up past 52c-ish in prime 95 blend.

Thanks for the help guys. I was looking to only spend around $35 but if the more expensive one would increase the longevity of my system then I might consider it.

I reset my fsb settings to stock so that my processor was back to 2.664 GHZ. I ran the stress test again and one of the cores was getting all the way to 76 Degrees Celsius. Is this normal? I might as well get a better cooler anyways since the stock one obviously sucks.

I need to reapply thermal paste again when I put a new heatsink in right?
The one I put for GOOD will be fine! its a trusted and well known cooler. It should come with thermal paste, or you can order some better stuff, but the stuff that comes with is just fine. and yes you absolutely have to reapply it. Read the directions when you install it and all should go just fine!

Currently the best bang-for-buck in the cheap end of the market is the Coolermaster 212+; add a second fan for push/pull and its even better.
But obviously if you have the extra coin, you get what you pay for... seconded on Trojita's recommendations.

I was tempted to put that on my list for GOOD but the xigmatech gets 4 to 5 C better temps for an extra 10 bux, and its quieter.
