A friends dad wantsto sell me this. It's just been re surrounded. Itsin good condition too. Amp is included.

Can this sub really put out
Can this sub really put out 13 htz, 20 htz at 120 db with 3% distortion? I think that's a lie.

No the spec sheet says it bottoms out at 13 htz. There was a review online About it saying that at 20htz, it has 120db SPL with well under 3% distortion. I think the manual says that too. Look at the vodyne link.

I would say most likely. Its hard to get a decent sub setup for under $300. I would say to check out some polk cheaper subs if you want a lower price. I have one and its not too bad.

I'm sure it can hit 13Hz at 3% distortion, but at 120dB (I assume 1m)? No, the sub would bottom out. I assume 13Hz is probably closer to around high 70s to low 80s dB. It will, however, give you solid output down to around the 25Hz range, which is excellent for any subwoofer.

It's a servo sub and Velodyne is known for being obsessed with THD numbers. However, the SPL with servo subs are severely limited, partly due to the sealed design, partly to do with dynamics getting cut by the servo unit itself while it tries to stabilize the cone. You won't be able to hit 120dB at 40Hz, with that sub, much less 13Hz.

I also don't believe any of the Velodyne's are even +/-3dB down to 13Hz...IIRC I've seen the graphs on their flagship subs and the most they get down to is around 18Hz (-3db at average with ~90dB @ 40Hz).

Most subs have their +/- numbers measured at around 80dB at 40 or 50Hz. When the volume level at 40Hz is 90dB and beyond most subs start to reduce their relative SPL output below 30Hz substantially, so -3dB @ 30Hz becomes closer to -10dB @ 30Hz, and gets worse as overall SPL increases.

I don't think I've ever seen a sub stay at +/- 3dB between < 20Hz to 50Hz above 95dB SPL, using 50Hz as the reference volume level. So people just look at max SPL@ sub 20Hz, not +/- as it's irrelevant when you are talking about Home Theater volume-levels, as no sub is gonna be even -10dB@<20Hz at higher volumes. This is simply due to physics of power compression.

Velodyne ULD-18 subwoofer system: Down-firing, floor-standing, dynamic, sealed-box, self-powered subwoofer with separate electronic crossover and servo-controlled power amplifier system. Driver: one 18" cone, ¾" linear travel, with accelerometer and preamp. Nominal input impedance: 20k ohms. Amplifier power: 400W continuous. Input sensitivity: 300mV for maximum output. Crossover: Independently selectable high-pass (36–212Hz), low-pass (60–193Hz) frequencies and phase (0 or 180° phase) via changing soldered-in resistors on a plug-in seven-terminal "header" socket by dealer. High-pass slopes (6–12dB/octave) can be also set. Unit under test shipped with nominal, standard 12dB/octave high-pass slope and both high- and low-pass frequency set at 85Hz. 15Hz subsonic filter point used with the 85Hz crossover. Frequency response: 18Hz–85Hz, ±3dB; 104dB at 20Hz with less than 0.5% THD.
Dimensions: "remote" power servo control unit: 17" W by 3.5" L by 11" D. Weight: 15 lbs.
Cabinet dimensions: 23.5" W by 31" L by 21.75" LH, 5.77 cubic feet. Weight: 105 lbs.
Finishes: walnut, oak, black; beveled hardwood edges, hardwood legs with concealed rollers.
Price: $2595 (1989); no longer available (2010).

these specs seem freaking impossible. it's a servo sub, so using the amp with a different sub is not gunna work. using the same amp with a different uld 18 driver wont even work unless they are ahnd calibrated together is the only problem i see.

for under $500, will i ever find a better sub? this uld18 has just been pretty much refurbished by an audio technician who's been doing this for over 40 years.
