Need a case for fanless airflow

Thread Starter
What are good cases to run a system completely fanless, at least in idle mode? (I would mount fans and turn them only on when temps get too high)

I am thinking it should have air intake at the bottom and vents at the top, to make use of rising hot air. PSU is probably best mounted at the bottom, since its the most important unit and a bit hard to monitor.
Those 90 degree mounted motherboard cases seem intriguing, since there the hot air from the GPU would not rise directly into the CPU as in normal cases.

So far all I found were expensive Silverstone cases, are there any alternatives at all?

You might have good results with a large, low-speed top fan, rather than a completely fanless setup.

That, or an open-air case like an Antec Skeleton. (though hopefully cheaper...)

Well it would not be completely fanless, just with fans off in idle mode, that should be easily possible with those new 35W Sandy bridge CPUs and huge heatsink coolers.
I just need a good case for the convection airflow.

Ah

Anything with a big opening up top for fans should work reasonably well. Something with a lot of mesh would be good. This looks like it'd work:

That does not look bad, although I have read that openings on the sides lower bottom to top airflow, so I wonder what is better, only top and bottom openings, or as many as possible everywhere?
Anyone got any 90 degree motherboard cases except the Silverstones?

Not that I can think of...that's a pretty unique design. There might be a few but AFAIK there aren't any really common ones...

I imagine it does mess with the bottom to top airflow a bit if you have a positive pressure setup (more are being pushed in than pulled out), but it's fine for a negative pressure setup(vice versa), which actually moves more air anyway. That case has a rear fan and two top fans, versus one front fan and a small one behind the CPU, so it's definitely a negative setup. It might be closer to even with a side fan added, but at that point there's a big fan blowing straight onto all of the major components and you don't have to worry about it. It definitely isn't going to heat up in there...

edit: Apparently it comes with the side fan, I'd missed that somehow. This thing should be fine for air cooling.

The Antec Lanboy Air might work well.

Remove all the fans and the "open-ventilation" might do the trick.

My tech station would do the trick. The only fans on it now are the CPU fan and the GPU fans.

sounds like you want a silverstone case with the mobo turned 90 degrees.

silverstone demoed the rv01 completely fanless, gpus, cpu, case everything was fanless and the computer didnt crash after stress testing
