First build i7950 x58A-UD3R GTX480

Thread Starter
This is the first real computer I have owned, till now I have struggled along with my trusty laptop
After putting it of for years, I have taken the plunge, and in the deep end at that.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Win7 64x
Intel i7950 3.07ghz
gigabyte x58A-UD3R Mobo
12 G RAM 2X Kingston HyperX T1 Memory Kit KHX2000C9AD3T1K3/6GX
Gigabyte GeForce GTX480 (one for now until the other gets delivered)
1TB Hitachi HD, 500G Hitachi HD (temp system disk waiting for extra funds for SSD maybe Pcie)
4x 1TB caviar green HD's (not hooked up yet waiting for friend to come over after Christmas to install a raid 5 array)
Prolima Mega Shadow (one Scythe 120mm Slipstream 1600rpm Fan, other didn't fit because of HyperX ram fins)
Aver-TV Duo Hybrid PCI-E
Broadcom 2046 Bluetooth 2.1
ASUS 802.11n Wireless LAN Card
Thermaltake ToughpowerXT 850W
Aerocool PGS Bx500

I can see that my build is a better than average for now, so I am keen to see what is possible to run stable 24/7.

This is my build version 1.0

Version 1.1 will include another GTX480 in SLI and the raid 5 will be operating
Version 1.3 will include some sort of SSD (maybe PCI-E)

One problem I had on the build was that I could only fit the pull fan on the mega shadow, because of the RAM heat-sinks.
I did have the push fan setup offset sitting on top of the ram with only 75% of fan hitting cooler (rest of fan blowing over the top of cooler).
But didn't notice much difference when I took it off so I could close case.

Any thoughts or advice Appreciated

You already got the RAM? Do you mind if I ask what you're doing that you'll ever need 12GB of RAM? Normally overkill isn't a bad thing, especially around here, but in the case of system memory, multiple DIMMs can really bring down or hold up an overclock. If you need that much, then never mind that, but 99.99% of people will never use more than 4-6GB. I HEAVILY multi-task and run several games at once and never do I get close to my 6GB. If you haven't gotten the memory yet and you don't need the 12GB, you could get a better 6GB kit (because the kits you have picked out there are slow, I can see a "C9" in the model number ).

edit: Re-reading your post, it seems as though you do already have the RAM. Just ignore me, then, heh. Supposed to come to us before you purchase!

So I went and took a look at those modules and I could immediately see what you were talking about. Those heat-spreaders are HUGE. If they can't be easily removed (it's usually okay to remove them, they don't actually do too much), then those sticks just will not work with your CPU HSF.

.. without case mods.

I am considering cutting the fins off with a dremel, then I can use 2 fans
my temps are idle 35c-38c and 60c-65c under load with a mild 3.8Ghz clok done by the gigabyte software (turbo is on etc.)

Eh, yeah, those temps aren't bad. They're not good, but they're not bad. How much voltage are you using for 3.8?

also I got that much ram because I was excited to have soooo many ddr slots I wanted em filled.
but I am a huge Photoshop fan and want to do some rally large scale PSB's (photoshops large format, format) I know Ps only addresses 4G ram but 64 bit addresses most of my ram and I plan to use it and illustrator
I also plan on learning more of 3D programs, focusing on Cinema 4d so SLI will be a little handy for render times and smooth gpu interaction, which was always such a drag on my laptop.

Woaaaaaah, hold the phone. No wonder your temps are high. Turn that Gigabyte automatic overclocking garbage off. No 950 needs anywhere near that much voltage for a stable 3.8 clock.

I think I may turn it off until I can read a few more tutorials.
I got the impression that the software that came with the mobo was a bit rinky dink.
I am just new to OC and need to read a lot more before I get carried away.
