Dremel Accessories for Modding...

Thread Starter
Ok, so I got a dremel 4000 and an additional 160 piece kit for it for Christmas. What I want to know, is which attachments/accessories are going to be helpful with modding.

In particular I'm looking at a few items and wondering if anyone uses these or has opinions on them.

The Workstation:

Flex Attachment

Thanks!

Flex attachment is nice and useful. Also I would recommend a Router Table if you are planning to work with acrylic. Dremel 4000 rules!

Would the router attachment like this on work?:

Or should I buy a separate routing table?
Thanks and +rep smile.gif

This attachment should be just fine. Anything is better than using all kinds of rails and rullers to do the job. Also Routing bits are pretty expensive, I paid $36 for a set of 6. You can do wonders with these tools.

I ♥ you. smile.gif Thanks a ton. Looks like I'll be going shopping next month. biggrin.gif

I personally use the Dremel only for detail work; for everything else I use the regular tools. I have a router complete with router table, edge guide, fixed base, and plunge base and I find it better and more solidly made than what I have seen on the Dremel attachment; not to mention with a real router there is a much larger selection of bits.

Probably the most useful attachments for the Dremel are: flex shaft, circle cutter, and cutoff/polishing wheels with EZ-lock mandrel.

The Dremel router table is very small, and the router bits are like "Barbie's tool set": really not very effective (I own the set).

A homemade table can be built, have pics if you like.

The contouring is little more than a mild champfer/eased edge.

An attachment that is quite useful is the circle-cutting attachment.

Hrm... But how much is a router and router table going to cost? I already have a desk-turned-work-bench and don't really have room to add another table.... And I'd +Rep you, but you're an editor. So, THANK YOU for the info. smile.gif

Very interesting... +Rep, and if you wouldn't mind linking me to the pics I would appreciate it as well...

It's not cheap; I was saying that it's overall a much better tool than the dremel attachment, which Syr aptly likened to a Barbie toy. IIRC, Syr has the Bosch palm router (not that expensive) for which he has fashioned a router table.

One of the biggest advantages to a real router (including the palm router) is that they use standard 1/4" shanks so you won't be restricted to a limited selection of overpriced Dremel bits.

I guess what I'm saying is that the Dremel attachments (e.g. router, drillpress, jigsaw) are OK if you have nothing else available and will (generally) get the job done, but the real tools are far superior.

The strong point of the Dremel is for doing detail work where other tools are too big.

I personally am more of a stickler for using the proper tool; I avoid spray paint cans as much as possible, I much rather apply the paint with an airbrush or spray gun.

Here is the router table I made for the Dremel with some shots of the roundover bit:

The bit set that I have is This One.

As Sir Rado stated, a full-size router or a palm router is preferable (also imho):
