How far can I push my 5850's? - Page 2

Thread Starter
Unfortunately my normal 5850 started to produce some flaws so I rma'd it. I am going to wait till I get it back from XFX and then flash both cards at the same time. Would it be safer to use an XFX 5870 bios when I do the flash?
You have a reference card. There is absolutely no reason to flash it. Your voltage is already unlockable. All you need to do is use Afterburner and you can OC to the moon.

If it's a reference card it really doesn't make a difference, as they all use the same PCB.
Only reason I went with ASUS' 5870 BIOS is because it an unlocked one (lifts cap in CCC).

Better cross your fingers on that RMA though, they might send you a non-reference model back as a replacement :/

Have you used MSI Afterburner with a CF config? It can get unbearably picky/buggy at times.
Flashing the cards has (to some) been much less of a headache.

He doesn't have to.

I presented as an option for his CF config, please read.

why bother with CCC? You can't increase voltage with it. The 5870 bios might raise it a bit so you have more room to play with but still AB can crank the voltage all the way to 1.35 and that gives you a lot of room to play with in terms finding a stable overclock. You can even start your overclock at boot so its very convenient.

Of course I have used it with the config file and it was perfectly fine. Never had any issues with it. **** it worked so well I was able to hit 5k in 3dmark11 with a single 5850. I've seen people with GTX 480's score less lol

It wasn't for CCC specifically, again another option presented to the OP.

Jesus, what is with everyone in this thread.
I'm not putting a gun to anyone's head on how to overclock their card, I'm presenting options.

It's not difficult at all, and you can flash back with a second card, even if it were fully bricked...

Again, just another option.
You don't like it? Fine, then don't do it, but don't crap on it becuase it's not what you like.
