Hargeisa (Somalilandpress)- This week somcable has completed most of their surveys covering total distance of 1200 Km in land. Covering Berbera to Las-anod border of punt land, Berbera to Tog-wajale border in Ethiopia, then Berbera to Lowya-Ado boder in Djibouti.

Probably is not relevant to OCN, but this is very good news to East Africa who desperately needs it.

Also, this is very strange because it's in Somalia. As you guys know this country has many problems.

EDIT: Including this image because it was included on main page with an link to this article that didn't have this image.

I foresee the rebels/fundamentalists/gangsters/random people with military hardware dig it up and threaten to cut it unless you meet their demands.

This is like putting new tires on a 1978 Datsun with no doors/windows and no engine. Why? Just throw that thing in the junkyard, it's worthless.

So.....throw Somalia in the junkyard? Or make it one? Either way, it's that type of short term thinking that causes areas like Somalia to be gang and terrorist breeding grounds. Don't cry in 30 yrs when the next terrorist attacks originate from Somalia and what would have costed you virtually NOTHING to fix at the start in 1970 now costs you a few TRILLION, like Iraq or Afghanistan.

Its funny because history gets repeated so often but basically inhabitants with their own Govt and system get overthrown so that their lands can be raped for its resources. Then the Euro country involved bungles the handover, essentially creating a political power vacuum. Then 50-100 yrs from now people will be talking about said country ( and sometimes said race of inhabitants ) like they're genetically inferior, less intelligent and predisposed to violence, when in reality their environment and atmosphere just provided no other alternative. I just love how time lets the historically challenged ( which is so many in the US ) just wash their hands of the situation.

But on to the topic at hand, I'm going to bet that this thing probably goes AROUND the most troubled areas. Either way, Somalia isn't going to get any better unless they do for themselves, so nice first attempt.

Possibly. They already have loads of internet cafes using satellite internet. I think it costs less than $5 per month to use Internet connection and it's faster than dial-up.
