Battlefield 2 sold 2.2 million copies as of July 2006.
Bad Company 2 has sold ("almost") 6 million copies worldwide, across all platforms.
The way I see it, Prone position takes away the element of a fast paced game, it becomes a campfest with high power rifles and or whatnot is your butter of choice.
It takes away the fun in a game. That's what Bad Company 2 has, until you're heavily stacked against an opposite side full of people better than your side.
Sure, the tendency to camp is still there, but it's lessened, teaching the player to move about more, wriggling across the map always due to the fact that a tank might blast through a wall you thought was protecting you one moment.
For me, I do not think Bad Company 2 would have flourished as much with prone position enabled. You'd have everyone in guillie suits with rifles hiding out in the bush and picking each other off.
