Should I go with a 1366 socket or an 1156 socket i7?

Thread Starter
Right now I have the Maximus II formula with an i5, but I want to upgrade to an i7. I was think of either going with the i7 870 and keeping my current motherboard, or buying the Rampage III Extreme and getting a 950 (or if I could find a deal on some 930 or whatever).

Do you think it would be better to upgrade my mobo as well or just a complete waste?

I also want to state that I really like the Maximus III Formula, but also I really, really want the Rampage III Extreme.

Unless you are doing heavy video/audio encoding you don't need the extra threads.

But if you want an upgrade an i5 760 or i7 870 would be the route to go depending on your needs and pocketbook.

If you got tons of cash and you want the newest and greatest with all the threads go R3E and 950.

how does your pocket book like the upgrade idea?? if you can get the 930 and the rampage III then go for it...my roomate has the 920 @ 4.2Ghz on a EVGA CLassified 3 mobo and runs butter smooth with whatever you throw at it. has SLI 460s but 580s are on backorder from EVGA and step up program so he is just waiting for them

If you were to upgrade I would either sell the Maximum III and purchase a new 1366 platform or wait until LGA1155 as 1156 is pretty much a dead socket.

You can get a i7 870 for $229 at Microcenter.

It's a nice little upgrade and would hold you over for a while.

IMO, Bulldozer is the one to wait for.

Why the hell would he spend more money for such a small performance increase?

OP:
Keep your i5 unless you can find a quad core i5 for cheap. You don't need the extra threads that the i7 provides.

If you REALLY want threads, get the Xeon X3440. It's cheaper than the i7 and has threads. And its 1156.
