GA GTX470 SOC is the better Gigabye series... It comes from the factory at 700/1400. Supposedly each gpu is tested and only the lowest VID & coolest running are used on it..

if you're that strapped for cash, then maybe the 6850 would fit your bill (with an eventual xfire- they scale close to 100% in xfire). i'm just (personally) really against getting 'bad' or old tech just to save a few bucks. the 470/480 have a lot of flaws, and i really wouldn't recommend getting one.

you can also go for a 460, there's some great offerings at the ~200 mark.

if you really don't want to go ati (btw re your edit as far as i know their drivers are fine) or compromise on increase in performance for this upgrade, i would suggest waiting another month or two until you can afford the 570/6950. i waited with my 8800 until now to get the 570, and if you waited almost as long with your 9800, i see no reason not to wait a couple more months and not settle on your new gpu.

hope this helps.

hm. okay you have convinced me il wait a little and save more for the GTX570. that should definitely last me throughout the 4 years of university.

Im not a fan of getting older tech for cheaper either, but i just cant afford the newest at the moment and i know the 470 will be sufficient for my needs. I cant sli at all, my motherboard only does xfire, and i dont want to xfire, the second slot only runs at 4x

i think you made a good choice. i had the same dilemma myself recently (budget-wise, not no-money-wise), and i ended up going with the 570. i don't regret that for a second. it (along with the 6950) are, imo, the best value/$ cards out right now.
if you feel confident with a single ati card then the 6950 would be a great choice too (and for less money would mean less waiting time for you). i had a hard time deciding between the two.
