ATI 5970 Crossfire FAIL! - Page 2

I dont experience any issues with dual 5970, however I am still using the 10.8 catalyst+drivers. My cards are at factory stock settings

I've tried with just one card - and it still has massive performance issues. Forgetting the crossfire, how come just ONE card still chokes up when graphic settings are turned up?

sgilmore,

I've increased the voltage as well. Possibly not high enough for a crossfire overclock, but for a single card I was able to run it perfectly stable at 900 mhz.

I've removed the card for now and will try to install 10.4 to see if my performance increases. Thanks for the responses.

Seriously... using WoW as a "benchmark" is not the best thing to do. It is badly coded in general, using an old engine patched a million times over the years. How about you try another game? Try cod 4, farcry, hell even crysis.
Edit : Have u tried shadows off? are u using experimental DX11 support?
Edit 2 : Plus i highly doubt its actually using 100% of the gpus. I bet u its not even using one 100%.

Webrider,

You make a good point. Other games seem to run smoothly - such as AVP. Even in eyefinity with the graphics turned all the way up there is no stutter. I'm unsure why WOW is the primary one that is so unresponsive. Others seem to get it working correctly and have zero stutter.

What of the statement the AMD guy made about dual 5970s is not possible on intel chipsets? Is that what they are supposed to say since it isn't supported?

what gaming resolution do you use with your monitor?

Also...WoW and Sc2 are terrible for crossfire/sli ...i dont think sc2 even supports it...i play sc2 with my quadfire 4870x2 setup (the old version of 5970 dual gpu card) and it stutters just a tad here and there but overall runs it very well at 1920x1200 ...

with dual 5970s you better have your cpu overclocked to at least 4.0ghz or you will bottle neck that setup...

and you dont need to overclock your cards or volts to run crossfire...maybe you ruined something by doing so...put them back to stock volts/speeds...and try playing game...make sure you have the crossfire bridge installed connecting the 2 cards together ..

D33r,

Thanks for the suggestions. I have overclocked, but not for long. I only tried that to test. I haven't damaged the cards. I have connected the crossfire cord. I've configured catalyst to enable crossfire, and enabled catalyst AI.

Even on just one card I'm afraid WOW just isn't fantastic for it. I've read several posts about the limitations of the 5970 due to the multi GPU ram not being shared between processors. I'm not sure if that's the issue - if it was then all 5970 users that play wow in eyefinity would be having the same bottleneck issue I'm experiencing.

I'm going to install Crysis to test FPS while running one card and after enabling SLI to see if I am experiencing any differences. Then i'm going to install Catalyst 10.4 and test again to see any differences.

ok...good put the cards back to stock speeds and volts...im running 10.5a drivers on my setup which is similar to yours...

And for WoW...iv heard that it the just dosent run very smoothly with crossfire/nvidia SLI setups...so it is not your cards...it is the game...

I hate to say this but you are going to have youre share of issues with a CrossfireX 5970 setup. Plus, I don't think there is a single game that benefits from 4 GPUs, I think 3 is the top spot right now and even that it overkill many times.

I would go with a 5970+5870 build, with the 5970 as the main.
Not trying to knock your setup its a ripping machine, but a little overkill.

Amstech,

Thanks! I generally buy one once every 4 years. I will agree - It's a little over the top. I'm hoping that by spending a little more now it will last a lot longer.

Perhaps it is just WOW. If that is my primary game perhaps it's best that I get a different video card? I'd like to think that dual 5970s will tide me over similar to my dual 8800GTX cards did (for 4+years) - and they still get good FPS on my old PC. That's when SLI was brand new and dang near nothing supported it.
