EDIT: What could make my computer freeze, then when press the restart button sometimes it hangs on windows logo screen and sometimes it works like nothing happened. Also dont know if it's coincidence but when it hangs on windows logo, I unplug the sata cabe and plug it back and most of the times it starts right up, sometimes I have to do the same process from 1-3 times. Also it had been a while since this problem went away, about 4 months and now it started again.

Today it frooze again, I had to restart the computer but then it hang on windows 7 logo. Then I did the same thing I used to do before unplug/plug the sata cabe, then it starts up but after few minutes loading up it frooze again. Did the same thing over and over, it froze again. Went away for dinner, came back 30 minutes later, turned it on and now its working like nothing happened.

I dont know what can it be, the HD, the MB, memory? I'm lost...

thank you in advance

I was thinking my best bet was the HD, as I have seen some hd failuring to the point where if I have left the computer off for a while it would work for couple minutes then starts to freeze to the point where I had to wait to it kind of cool down again to get some more time of it. But this is kind of different after it starts it could go days without problem, or it could happen again 2-3 times a day.

A friend of mine told it could be memory, he mention that the fact that I'm unpluging/pluging the cabe it coud reset the memory and make it work... does that makes any sense? If I run memtest would that be able to find the problem if is something wrong with the ram? Or if I do the test when lets say the computer doesnt give me any issue at the time the test is being made it wont be able to find it?

Please any thoughts?

hi Moskito.
have you checked the cables going to the hard drive are pushed in properly?
while in there, check ram etc... and give it a clean.

also go to device manager and check all the drivers are upto date.

at startup, press f8 and do a system startup repair.
or pop in a win 7 dvd and do a proper repair.

if all this fails, backup all docs etc... and do a reinstall of win 7

How many sticks of RAM do you have, and what type?

It sounds like it could be a RAM issue, either run Memtest to check it, or (depending on how many sticks of RAM you have and what size) take a stick out and see how it runs.

It you've had your RAM a while, and it's generic, or even if not, it's entirely possible that it's dieing. Try removing the one closest to the CPU and seeing, I seem to find the closest stick dies off first.

Also, if you could fill out your full system specs, it'd help greatly.
How many HDD's, PSU type, manufacturer and wattage, RAM type and how many sticks of what size etc.

Hello guys thanks for the help so far, it just happen again... The sound started to loop computer frooze and I had to restart. This time I restarted right the way to check the temps on BIOS, my cpu was under 27c and system 28 and mpc 60. Inside the computer it's clean I have a side window panel and it looks realy neat. I have added my system specs to my sig and I'm running 4gb (4x1GB) of ram, I have run memtest86+ for 2 full passes today with no errors, I know I probably should left it longer but I might do it tonight. Also I would like to know if should I use, memtest, memtest86 or memtest86+.

It's really strange and annoying for the computer to crash and restart like nothing is wrong for couple hours some times day, also sometimes it hangs and I start messing with the cable to get it working, but once it is working works like nothing happened.

the segate hd its a bit loud at times, just like it's scratching some thing. But its like this since I had it, and I have seen some others computer with the same sound, so it might be something or not.

About windows, when it happened before I had windows XP at the time, now with vista the samething. My video cards drivers are updated.

Should I peform the memtest tonight (again which one should I get?), and if it does not find any issue should I go for a new HD?

thanks in advance

Moskito, I just replaced an EVGA 680i board that had a similar issue. I think the SATA controller on the board had started to go...first I lost my 1TB WD Black drive -- couldn't boot with it plugged in -- then I lost my DVD burner, also wouldn't boot with it plugged it. Unplugged these devices and I could boot / shutdown with no problems (1TB drive was not my boot drive), plug them back in and startup / shutdown issues would reappear.

Just mentioning this since we had similar boards / problems. You can try plugging your Seagate into another SATA port to see if that helps, but it didn't seem to matter in my case.

See this is where it gets me thinking, when it did happen for the first time I didnt know what it was, so I mess with the cables and it worked. But sometimes unpluging only from the HD end and trying to boot it did not worked and also sometimes it did, but just like now when it froze I just restarted went on bios to check temps, restart again and I didnt have to do nothing and it boot. Another thing that I have done was when it fail to boot after unpluging from the hd ends only, I removed the cable complete and sometimes even reposition it on another sata port.

Now it's getting into a mess of sometimes:

sometimes it crashes and boot straight up.
sometimes it crashes I try to restart if hangs on windows logo, I then open the side panel and only unplug/plug the HD cable, boot again and it work.
sometimes if the above option fails I unplug the sata cable from both ends (HD and MB) and it boots.
sometimes I also changed sata ports.
and also yesterday (this is new) when It happened I tried one of the options from above but then I got it to boot, but not on windows logo, this time loading after windows logo on, it crashed until I finally gave up, went to have dinner came back turn it on and it work until today when it crashed again
couple minutes ago.

I probably should start to trying to eliminate this possibilites by trying one of these steps over and over and see if I get it to work or not. but if all works Im lost again.

any thoughts on how to troubleshoot this?

Hmm, what OS are you running? Have you tried doing a chkdsk /R to see if there are any issues with the drive? I would troubleshoot this by trying to eliminate one component at a time, beginning with the hard drive, then the memory -- these seem like the two most likely sources of this issue.

Im on windows 7 right now, but same problem happened with xp.

right now Im on another computer as I got stuck and I dont want to be messing around without testing it.

Ok so here is what I did. I did a cmos reset, and also I chance sata cables again, brand new on plastic and everything. So I did insert it on sata 1 this time, It use to be on sata 6 - 3 (I have used from sata 3 to 6 already but never sata 1 or 2, because they are on a side way of the mb, last time was set on sata 6) now with cmos reset my memory is back at default 5-5-5-18 (i had it at 4-4-4-12 which was what corsair recomended). So now I got lock up at windows 7 logo again, I made 2 times to windows move mouse around for tops 20 sec until it froze. I have done this about 10 times now. 2 times it made to window and froze, and once I hit f8 and tried to load safe mode but it also froze.

im going to give it a rest and check later without changing or moving any cables to see if i can get couple hours of it working just like before. If not Ill try to unplug/plug only the HD cable.. and so on.

any sugestion on what else should i do?

----

Just tried to boot right now, and it load windows and froze after 2 minutes. Since my last post I'm stuck (which was yesterday). I havent change anything yet... I'm turning it on one more time as I write this to see how long will take now to freeze. Windows is loaded again 8:23 froze at 8:25. So it seens that without changing the cables I cant get it to run stable like before, even when it was for hours or days.

So next test will be moving only the HD cable. I'm going to purchase a new hd from bestbuy today, I wanted to wait for next week to order from newegg but as I'm in need for a HD for the pc I'm typing right now I'll use it for test then I'll move to this one.

EDIT: After many unsuccessful tries after a clear cmos and cable set on sata 1 where I only could get up to 2 minutes until it crashes, I removed the cable from the hard drive and inserted again 2 times. Both tries didnt work either. When I set the cable on sata 6....... never mind I was going to say it was working but it just froze. But it lasted almost 10 minutes. I was about to ask if that would have been the mb sata connectors....

Ok I'm going nuts here so I took the HD apart and I noticed there was a kind of a jumper on it.

Just like this one. I removed and plug back in on sata 1 which was not getting more than 2 minutes without crashing before, it's been running now no crash yet... by the way im on it right now.

Now could that jump be causing it? or it might crash soon again? I'm afraid that I'm just getting sometime of it before it freeze. On the HD label it says that the way the jump was configured was lmited to 1.5gb without it its 3.0

I also got the model number: Segate Barracuda 3500630as
