i7 950 4ghz HT off vs 3.6ghz HT on

Thread Starter
Hey guys, I've been messing around with different clocks. I've come to the conclusion that I'm stable at 100% loads with either option. If I turn on HT at 4ghz my temperatures spike too high for my liking (80C). So, I can either do one or the other. Which would you choose for a gaming machine? Thanks! Also, HT seems to add about 9C in my case... is that normal?

Temps with 4ghz HT off are 67-69C LOAD prime
Temps with 3.6ghz HT on are 75C Load prime

Yeah, I really want to keep the temp lower than 75C and I can't believe HT adds nearly 10C to my cpu temp. I also couldn't believe I could run 4ghz at 67C with HT off. I just want to be able to avoid bottlenecking my GPU's....

For gaming 4.0Ghz HT off will get you slightly better benchmarks.

For overall/general performance HT on is better.

Yes, HT generates a lot of extra heat, that's normal.

edit: 75 prime load is fine. You'll never hit prime95 numbers in real world usage. I hit 83 under prime95 and never even get into the 70s even under extreme gaming (left a CPU monitor on for a few weeks to make sure it was safe)

Hey Guys!

From what I have gathered, most gaming software today doesn't demand any more than 2-4 cores of processing power. To the best of my knowledge, this theory would include titles like Crysis, Metro, CoD, etc.

I'm sure You'll find others that could hook You up with links to benches, but as I have been doing more looking and more link stockpiling, I don't have them on-hand (yet).

But, don't give up! There's a warm, fuzzy feeling about seeing 8 cores humming away at 100% on Prime95. Don't deny Yourself a small treat every now and again. tongue.gif

Gota agree with this. You can always have both profiles saved and load 4.0 with ht off when you decide to game. There are also other instances where HT is better, folding for example.

I suggest have ht on, 3.6 until you have to game something fierce.

i would suggest reseating that H70. those temps are crazy for a cooler like that eek.gif
here are some results of my 950 @ 3.80Ghz / 4.00Ghz and 4.20Ghz.
look at the temperatures on the 950. surely the H70 can do better or if not the same.

Why not work on getting 4ghz with HT on?

With your 950 that's gotta be possible! Especially since you have a great h70 on it!

Back on topic....

HT is "worth it" if you'll use it.
