They've made OS' that work on chips that aren't x86 compatible before.

if this happens it will change a lot of things. i'll believe it when i see it though

we could get more interesting tablets. (not that windows can't run on tablet PC's, but the battery life and form factor will benefit.)

Very true.

Microsoft need to catch up in the tablet market.

I'm just hoping they don't take too much away from the OS, like iOS.

Who knows this may in turn force Apple to make OSX for ipads.

That would be my ideal portable a tablet with a full blown operating system.

Within the next two years, I hope/plan to have a tablet with most of the functionality of my Windows desktop, mainly slanted towards consuming information, but also able to create limited text content.

I'd almost rather them take something like WP7 and build up, rather than W7 and build down for tablets. W7 would need a better touch interface imho to be useful on a tablet. WP7 has that, and if they can make that into a full featured "desktop functionality" OS, that could be awesome.

Numerous youtube demos have shown that Windows 7 on a tablet works just fine. The only thing that I can see getting a redesign are some of the system options and the start menu.

Windows Phone 7 was designed for <4" devices, and its fairly anemic as it is. Porting it up would be a disaster. It doesn't even support multitasking! It would probably be less work to start from scratch.
