Asus Rampage Extreme III and i7 930

Thread Starter
I am trying to overclock my computer and have the goal of 4.2 GHz. Unfortunately, so far, all I have been able to achieve is 3858.80 MHz and Real Temp is reporting 88, 88, 81, and 83 for Celsius temperatures (and I am only idling!). This can't be good! I just don't know what the problem is; while I have been following various guides on this forum, most of the time my computer won't even boot so I have to clear the CMOS and start over. Could this have anything to do with the fact that my RAM is only PC3 10600 1333MHz?

Do you think I need to take the heat sinks of my board in reapply TIM because these temps are ridiculous! I have the liquid cooling system that is built into my thermaltake case but maybe is the stock CPU block not acceptable?

80c IDLE? Something is very wrong. I would reseat the CPU block right away, and give it new thermal paste.

What are you idle temps with no overclock?

I mean with temps that high, I'm thinking of questions like is there any water in your loop .

Definitely remount your cooler and make sure that the heatsink is in contact with your chip.

I wouldn't overclock until the temperature issue is resolved. Which BIOS version are you using on your board?

I have this case:
http://www.thermaltakeusa.com/Produc...C=1445&ID=1480

The case has the following built in:
http://www.thermaltakeusa.com/Produc...C=1444&ID=1616

I followed the Arctic Silver 5 instruction on how to properly apply the TIM to the CPU and I have the water block on the CPU moderately tight (it doesn't move around).

Do you think the heat is why every time I try to overclock, the computer doesn't boot?

Yep.. Or bad Voltages..

What are your settings?
Can we get a picture of your Bios?

I have the Same cpu and MB as you... 4.3ghz on a cheap air cooler with max temps under prime95 67c and idle of 29 = 31c.

I think you should list the BIOS settings you currently have. That BigWater shouldn't be horribly worse than an air cooler.
