Major Problem(s)?

So a couple of weeks ago I built a new computer. AMD Phenom II 965, Ripjaw 4GB 1600 DDR3, A gigabyte mobo (which I will get the exact model of shortly). I am currently using the stock 965 heatsink, I was planning on changing that really soon. I have a 650w Corsair PSU also.

The first started when I first turned my machine on, when I turned it on, the monitor would still act as if it was in sleep mode. It magically went away. Well, a couple of days ago it started up again. I'll be randomly using my computer (it doesn't matter what I do on it, it could be idle or I could be playing a game), everything connected to the computer will just shut off seemingly (keyboard, mouse, monitor).. everything. The fans and everything inside the tower, however still run. The heatsink still spins - etc. I have to restart to get my computer to work, and sometimes it will start up, everything will turn on like it's booting up properly, but then it will just shut off. I turn it on again and it usually works for a while.. only to turn off again. I am stupid when it comes to computers mostly, however I am 99% sure I put all the parts and such together correctly. I use windows 7, sometimes when I try to turn my computer on after this has happened, my computer goes to a 'a problem has occured with windows, you can repair or start windows normally' screen.

Excuse me if this is explained horribly or is too vague, and I will add more info.. but I was just hoping someone would have some basic suggestions. I've been told it could be the psu, the mobo or it could be overheating. I don't know which one of these suggestions to follow up on first though. Thank you.

I agree that it could be one of these things. We can easily test the overheating one. You need to install a temperature program called CoreTemp. You also should download a program called Prime 95. Running this will load your CPU to its max. Then you can see the temps in CoreTemp. If you PC shuts down during this test due to temps then it is a cooling problem.

If the system shuts off before the temps get very high then it is likely the PSU or the MB. I would run the temp test first as it is the easiest.

After we eliminate that possibility then we can move on to testing other things.

I do have coretemp, it says it runs about ~50c normally while gaming, lower while not, but I will try prime 95.

It sounds to me as it could be your RAM settings. Set you BIOS settings to default, that means 1333 for your RAM. What are your clocks, timings and volts? Also leave a link to your RAM so we can check their default settings.
And yes you need a cooler too. Try the CM 212+, it works great and is cheap. Also what GPU are you using? That could be the problem too, check for a driver update for it.
I would check the MB and PSU last.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231277 RAM.

I'm using a ATI Raedon 4890, was gunna replace that soon too.

And yeah, my plan was to wait until after xmas for the cooler, I figured the stock would be fine until then, don't OC or anything atm.

I'll update in a few mins with volts etc.

I had a similar problem with my signature rig. The original kit of Mushkin ram I used when I built the system had some sort of compatibility issue with my motherboard. My monitor would stop displaying for no reason and I would get random bsods. I used memtest to identify the faulty ram and rma'd it. Once I got the replacement kit I continued to have the same problems so Mushkin suggested I try the kit I currently have. Since then it's been smooth sailing. So after that long winded response what I'm trying to say is "it may be your ram..."

Stock cooler is fine as long as you don't do any gaming. As soon as you use 3D your temps will go up. To high for that cooler, although 50c while gaming even this time of year is great. That's where I'm at with the CM 212+ so...

What driver are you using for your 4890?? BTW, fill your system info please. If you are using 10.12 some people have reported problems with it, including myself.

Should I just put in a thumbnail of something showing all the volts/timings etc? Excuse my major stupidity. :| Never really used forums, or ever really checked all this stuff before.
