Headphones or Speakers?

Thread Starter
When I build my video editing setup, am I better off to invest in some quality speakers or headphones? I have about a 100 dollar ish max for audio. I will be focusing on hip hop, dubstep and such 90% of the time if I'm listening or editing music. The rest of the time will be sounds from the footage.

I know I can get M-Audio Studiophile AV40s for about 150 dollars. I'm not sure what to get as far as headphones. The headphones don't necessarily need to be portable but the need to be comfortable so I can wear them for prolonged periods of time.

cheers.gif Thanks for the help!

Headphones will always offer better audio quality for the money. MUCH better, unless you really know your stuff about room acoustics and have a TON of money (at least $10,000).

Headphones aren't effected by room acoustics, and have much less material costs, so more money goes to the "sound" (drivers).

In your budget, i would recommend audio-technica M50's. A forum favorite of Head-fi.org (an audiophile forum). You will find no better headphones in your price range for the style of music your looking into. Don't be fooled by the name, these aren't off-brand headphones, they are professional headphones. They make any bose or "beats" (or any other "high end" consumer level headphone) sound like utter crap.

They have a neutral sound, which is great for studio monitoring, yet with a slight emphasis on bass.

You can read some reviews [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-M50-Studio-Monitor-Headphones/dp/B000ULAP4U/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1293079592&sr=8-1"]here on amazon[/ame], but i recommend buying them at B&H. B&H photo is the Newegg of audiophiles.

Protip: Stay away from bose, monster beats, or any other consumer level audio equipment.

The M50's are comfortable and extremely well built as well.

Don't worry, this is coming from a 16 year old with $200 DT990's and a Xonar ST. Built my first computer at 14. I know what I'm talking about.

Enjoy wink.gif

EDIT: P.S. Just letting you know, if you start getting interested in headphones and are looking to upgrade from closed headphones to open headphones, look for "sound stage" in headphones. Its like surround sound.. but better, from regular stereo.

I would go for a nice closed headphones. The reason being is if your listioning to dubstep and hip hop you would some low end and at that price i dont think there are any good 2.1 setup that has good fidelity. I have a set of ath-a700 and they play low and sound really good. I got them used for $75 but they are like $120 new.

Get speakers instead of headphones. You need that real bass.

Do I need a nice soundcard to match then? Would onboard audio suffice or would it degrade the sound in any way? Would it have the same effect on speakers?
