Want to get into HWBOT.

Thread Starter
Hey guys, I've been looking around here for awhile now. Always more reading than posting when it comes to this section, however I think it's time I contribute what hardware OC skills I can into points for the OCN HWbot team.

My OC'ing "skills" are more on the AMD side of things, it wasn't until just recently I made my first intel purchase with the i7 860, and Maximus III Gene, as well as some GSkill Eco memory. I planned this buy with OC'ing in mind. I am cooling with a H50 right now, and am not afraid to slush bucket it or whatever is needed.

I've reached some decent speeds with my AMD chips, as seen in my sig. I even hit 4.13 on my 955 but it was sort of a suicide run. Right now I'm at 4.0 on my 860, @ 1.39v w/ht off but I can probably lower the voltage quite a bit.

First steps, anyone?

Well, the first step is understanding all the voltages and what they do.

VTT (or QPI/DRAM) controls your IMC so you're gonna need to bump that to run memories higher and to get that BCLK up.
IOH controls the chipset voltage. If you're benching with a big video card, you'll want this at around 1.2-1.25V, otherwise keep it closer to 1.1V.
I'm not quite sure of what PLL does, but my best results on 32nm processors have been at 1.55V and 1.8V for 45nm.

Increasing PCI-Ex frequency also helps with higher BCLK's. The best range to work in before you get into extreme cooling is 104-109MHz.

When overclocking P55 the first thing I do is find how far I can get with the BCLK. Relax everything (QPI on lowest multi, Memories and CPU below rated specs) and just bump VTT until it won't do anything anymore or you reach the max voltage you are comfortable with. For me, under DICE or LN2, that is 1.6V. I won't go above 1.5V on water.

When higher VTT stops working, you'll have to find what combination of other settings lets you go higher. On my i3 + P55 FTW 200 it was 1.15V IOH, 104MHz PCI-Ex and 1.25V VTT my cap. On the i5 650, it kept scaling past 1.45V VTT and IOH/PCI-Ex didn't do much.

Overclocking is pretty much only trial and error. Keep at it and your results will improve.

Remember to learn how to strip an OS and what OS to use for which benchmarks. With that setup you could get quite a few hardware points from testing 3D benchmarks on those video cards.

Good luck!

Wait that is your benchmark OS?
It seems like you installed everything on it, the point is to keep it to the necessities to run the OS & Benchmarks.

No, no it's not. I'm just OC'ing on that right now. When I get my max I will setup my benching OS.

Ohhh! Lol
Looks good but I don't have that chip, the temps seem a bit high though.

dont waste your time with intel burn or p95 those are for stability. Use whatever bench you want to pass as your guide.
