Best cpu for WoW - Page 5

Wow definently uses more then two cores, I just upgraded from an E8400 to a Q6600 (OCed to 3.46GHz). The difference is very noticeable and very large.

I don't think with all the money they are making that they would not add multi core support.

As for the best CPU for wow just get and 3ghz or higher quad.

I haven't played WoW recently (I played LOTS 3 years ago), but I'm told by a very serious WoW player that it will use more than 4GB RAM when things get crowded. I'm curious to try it with 4GB and 8GB to see how much difference it makes.

And yes (official Blizzard FAQ), WoW will use 3 cores. That's pre-Cataclysm; it may be more now.

Looking at the Tom's article, WoW will gain from more then 2 Intel cores but the return is minimal. That said, you can get a C2Q for around the same price as an E8400/8600 C2D. The real question is how much do you want to spend? i run with the system in my sig at maxed settings except for shadows at low and i get 60 fps everywhere including the 10-man raid I ran the other day. I quit raiding for this expac so I can't tell you 25-man fps. If you have a motherboard capable of using a Core2 already then I would say go with a Core2Quad. If you want to upgrade everything i3/i5 are both good choices. AMD from the Tom's review needed at least 3 cores to = 2 Intel cores and if I remember correctly the Intel box had better max fps across the board. According to Blizz, WoW supports multiple cores, it just seems to not utilize them equally.

i recently unlocked my 550 be to a quad at 3.4, and noticed 0 difference in fps. i was able to put everything on ultra when i upgraded my 5750 to a 5830.

Not just loading in either.
Cannot disagree with you there. I used to run WoW off a RAID 0 array and it makes a huge difference with loading times, and also with those add-ons that give you extended item info on the tooltip.

Running from a single drive causes those add-ons to freeze the game while the data loads. With an SSD it'd be night & day.

A quad at 4GHz with fast (VERY fast) RAMs and a nice SSD raid is gonna give you the best performance.

WoW is plainly horrid at optimisation, it spends the whole day buffering textures from HDs to RAM instead of buffering as much as possible in the loading times.

Games like Oblivion still pawn the ass of WoW in buffering techniques. Mine loads about 600MB in textures every ten seconds, and it still runs smoother than WoW in heavily crowded places.
