I've had a few Zalman coolers (CPU and GPU), and my conclusion is that they look pretty and cost a pretty penny, but their cooling abilities are mediocre.

I have had multiple zalman 9700's(one 9500 and one 9900) and they have all done excellent. But I have bought them refurbished off ebay for $25-$30 each. I wouldn't pay $70 for one. I have kept everything from a AMD 3600x2 brisbane 1.5v 3.3ghz to E8600 4.8ghz 1.4v to Q6600 1.575v 3.8ghz to AMD 940BE 1.45v 3.6ghz all cool. But I have always had massive front to back air flow with high cfm fans.(Blowing air into the top of the zalman from the side fan seems to really hurt their performance).

Cooling performance is not that great. They do look good. Go for something like the titan fenrir. Great performance for the money

Zalmans are decent but they aren't the sweet deal for the price kind of coolers.

The fans are fixed so you can't replace them. The heatpipes are limited and the heatsink surface area is much smaller than more recent tower style coolers. Compared to stock they kick ass though, of course.

I'd recommend a Xigmatek. I modded my S1283 to have 2x120MM fans and it performed pretty darn good.

I however, ventured into water-cooling a short time after..
I now get about 35C full load @ 3.5GHz with a 1055T. I used to get to the mid-to-high 50's on the Xiggy.
