if you are not getting grub to start
use a Ubuntu live cd/flash drive to reinstall grub

this should work

but here is how to install grub from a linux boot cd usb so on

mount all partitions that have an OS install on them

>sudo grub

This will get you a "grub>" prompt (i.e. the grub shell). At grub>. enter these commands

>find /boot/grub/stage1

This will return a location. If you have more than one, select the installation that you want to provide the grub files.
Next, THIS IS IMPORTANT, whatever was returned for the find command use it in the next line (you are still at grub>. when you enter the next 3 commands)

>root (hd?,?)

Again use the value from the find command i.e. if find returned (hd0,1) then you would enter root (hd0,1)

Next enter the command to install grub to the mbr

>setup (hd0)

>quit

So you did an advanced setup? Did you give the /boot and / enough space??

Basic partition should be this:
Partition 1 - Primary - /boot - EXT2 - 200-500MB
Partition 2 - Primary - / -EXT3 - 5+GB
Partition 3 - Primary - swap - equal to or double the amount of RAM
Partition 4 - Logical - /home - be generous, this will hold installed programs, music, pics, documents, ect..

Could try a grub recovery but I would pop the live cd back in and post some sreenshots looking under System, Administration, Disk Utility so we can see your HDD setup

EDIT: I typed a little too slow for the above replies. If you end up shrinking your Windows partition and can't boot into Windows be sure to run a chkdsk and you should be fine. And I would just install 10.10 if you can run the live cd..

Well good luck to you but if your partitions are setup to where there isn't enough room for your boot or / partition then you may have problems still.

Doesn't the Ubuntu Install CD have a boot menu wherin there is a recovery option? I seem to recall one. If not Super Grub Disk will allow you to boot into existing install since apparently all that is missing is Grub. You just have to know the Linux name for the hard drive/partition that /boot is on. For example, assuming it is the 2nd drive, it might be (hd1,1) since drives were numbered from 0-9 and partitions from 1-9 on legacy Grub.

Once the system is booted you don;t have to "chroot" or find anything. You should be able to verify that Grub2 was installed either with "apt-get -install grub" or even with Synaptic. If it isn't installed, install it. Once in do "update-grub" in terminal or console (Linux names for what windows calls
Command Prompt).
