Well to keep it simple just do this, I'm off to bed after this post though.

Delete the EXT4 and swap partitions you made for Linux in that last screenshot you posted. Then Click on the free space to create a new partition making it Primary-/boot-EXT2-500MB, then after that one click the free space again to create this partition, Primary or Logical-/-EXT3-5GB, the free space to create another, Primary or Logical-swap-4GB, then for the last just use the remaining free space to make Logical-/home-EXT3

EDIT: thats how I've been doing it for a long time now and haven't had any problems at all. Could just wait for more help but I'll leave you with a screeny of my setup and I'm off to bed

But I do understand why Voodoo does it the way he does and I may do that the next time I format

So i should just leave the 15gb space taken up rather than getting screwed over later?
No, you can salvage it from Windows 7 Disk Management. Nuke it, expand your NTFS and reboot with Windows 7 DVD near by to fix MBR just in case cause you might not be able to boot into Windows. I gave you a link how to fix MBR earlier.

Don't get too stressed. This is how you learn. At least you are booting into Windows.
When I first started with Linux, I reinstalled couple times due to being stuck in runlevel 3 ( at the command line, no GUI, no Windows) cause X Server wouldn't start due to gfx driver issues lol.

Can I ask why you use EXT4 instead of EXT3? I've been installing the same way for a long time now so your teaching me things to my understanding EXT3 was able to be read faster than 4

To the author of this thread, hope you post back with success soon

Also guys, i posted earlier about how I installed it on a perfectly clean HDD and it still wouldn't boot from even that hard drive..

alright i figured this much out so far.. the 2 green partitions is my split 320gb hdd, one side has windows and the other has my programs / steam.. the orange one is the original ubuntu partition i made, and the blue one is im guessing the amount of space im using to be on linux right now..?
The really loong blue one is just the drive selection and represents the whole /dev/sda drive. The incredibly small (by comparison, but perfectly fine in usage) blue one is the Linux swap partition. It appears the only problem you are having is that you are not installing the Grub2 bootloader, either at all, or to the whole disk's MBR. If you install it to root some 3rd party boot managers can chainload it and work fine. Windows bootloader is not good for that.

So either get a neutral bootloader you can install from Windows or, easier, just install Grub2 to the MBR. It will boot Windows just fine as well as Linux. Done.

PS It would be better to have a little more than 15GB (say twice that?) dedicated to Linux but since you only used up less than 4GB it will work for awhile, enough to "get your feet wet"..
