[ESC] Windows 8 Will Be a "Real New Push Into PC Gaming" - Page 6

Microsoft has a habit of doing a massive amount of damage to PC gaming then standing on the rubble with a tiny healing band and asking where it hurts.
The only thing I could care about with respect to windows and gaming is windows not choking, causing a system reboot, or a quit-to-desktop while I'm playing a game. Otherwise, I think it'd be best if windows stayed away from the PC gaming market, and stuck to their [crappy] consoles.

This. They don't care about the state of PC gaming. They want to make more money while at the same time eliminating piracy. All I know is you better have a constant internet connection or your games will not play. I'm sure they will have some sort of licensing that will require a connection at all times.

Unless MS comes up with something really amazing I'll stick with Vista.

I didn't find 7 to be that amazing. Besides loading a few seconds quicker and switching around a few menus to confuse me I didn't see or feel that much of a difference.

what does ps3 have to do with ps2? if you have ps2 games where the hell did your ps2 go?

steam sales is an old trick. it's called the bargain bin in brick and mortar stores. i just picked up a copy of RE5 and fable 2 for xbox 360 for $5 each last monday.

wait i have to install vent/teamspeak calibrate my mic, find a friend who knows a server and i havn't even joined the game yet? i'll just plug in my headset for xbox 360, join your party, instantly find you and have it work like it should. i can actually start my xbox and join a game with friends faster than i can start up my pc and i have an ssd.

paragraph 3 is nice, but you answered yourself in paragraph 4.

another thing i don't like about steam is xbl it puts zero resale value on any game you buy. xbl doesnt force you to register your game to be able to play it. take for example, i bought cod:bo when it came out in nov. played the heck out of single player on veteran as well as prestiged once. it sat for a week and i put it on sale for $45 on another forum and someone snagged it - you simply cannot do this with steam. i guess you can just pirate a copy for single player but good luck making it work multi player.
Argument is invalid.

Consoles are outdated and generally suck for multiplayer.

Second, if they really wanted to improve Windows for PC gamers, they could optimize Windows. For instance, when booting Windows, it could ask if you are about to game and then boot a select part of Windows that is just optimized for gaming. Those things that will optimize/harness the power of the CPU, mem and GPU and not all the other 100+ apps that are visible/invisible working in the background and stealing performance/mem.
This, they should launch a cheaper version of Windows called "Gamer Edition" with all the extra crap cut out.

joining an xbox party automatically gives you voice chat that's clear - you need an extra program besides steam, about 15 minutes into calibrating a mic, and a button press each time you wan't to talk for on pc.

invite other friends or your whole party into playing your game is very trivial

when the inevitable death of xbox live comes in some years for whatever reason, i'd still be able to access my games since they're on physical media. if steam goes away tommorow, what will happen to your games?

when i do buy a game on steam, i take the cd-key and install the game using an iso. i don't need to advertise to the world that i'm cool because i've played bc2:vietnam for four hours last night. which doesn't really make sense because you can't join your friends bc2 game from steam and must use the HORRIBLE friends system on bc2 anyway.

truth is steam is nothing beyond source games. beyond the facade it's an adware/download manager for gaming that charges the same price for a boxed version.

i love xbl but it's a closed system along with xb360. it will never work with pc's open platform.
Not sure about the first one since I don't really play many non-source games and those I do play aren't in Steam.

XBL? Clear voice chat? You either sound like a high pitched version of Justin Beiber or a jaded 23 year old pedophile, plus you can do that thing where it turns the Mic on when it detects noise on Ventrillo, etc too...How long ago did you last try voice chat?

Not really, the controller makes it fun, especially the position of the Xbox Guide button.

Steam backups? We'd get warning, ya'know...Plus, neither is likely to be removed, they're too big now, it's like Windows, too many people love/like it and use it every day. (i.e. They make profits)
Not to mention, physical media will always break, I'd personally rather physical media I can legally make backups of (i.e. Back my favourite Steam games up onto HDD, then put that on an external or a DVD or something...better than having a disc that you need to get a drive with a custom flashed firmware to make a copy of, backup or not.)

Xbox live does the exact same thing? And gamerscore is just a big prick waving contest.

Adware? I haven't seen any ads that bypass any privacy I have on Steam...? Either you haven't used Steam for a few years or you're getting confused with something else...

It's a platform, like it or not, saying its a DL manager is like saying XBL is one because you can download games and movies on it...

I'm not the only person in the world who had their PS2 fall to the dreaded DREs and didn't have the money to buy a new one.

RE5 and Fable 2 vs Super Meat Boy, Garry's Mod, TF2 (With updates), etc. Hm, which one has better games for sale during the holiday season?

You do? I simply plugged my mic into the mic port on the back panel and it worked on Ventrillo, etc perfectly fine and while you may start a game faster, the matchmaking (GoW2 anyone?) and long arse load times on Xbox and PS3 really make PC faster in the long run, take it from someone who owns a 360, a PS3 and a fairly good gaming PC.

And you can bet they will do that in the next major version of XBL if they can, especially once physical media finally dies.
