Then after trying free Xandros when they took over, I bought v1, 2, 3 and 4. It was pretty damned sweet until they basically abandoned SOHO Desktop users in favor or Enterprise workstations.

I replaced Xandros with Ubuntu, actually Kubuntu, since Xandros was a KDE based distro and so is Kubuntu. Besides, I prefer KDE. IMHO Kubuntu is sort of like v6 Xandros if it had ever gotten that far. It is an extremely easy migration.

For the record, polls here show (and largely because of Ubuntu's high profile success story) that more people use Ubuntu/Gnome instead of Kubuntu/KDE. They each have their pros and cons but Ubuntu is dropping gnome and the KDE team is larger, more viable and has a faster development cycle than Gnome. I recommend Kubuntu FTW. You can install Gnome later along with it if you choose, but you will find it more like what you are used to than Ubuntu/Gnome.
Hey thx a ton, yea KDE is right up my alley, again thx a bunch.

Greetz and you're welcome.

If you want to stick as close to Xandros as possible as well as be as longterm stable as is possible with managed systems I would opt for 10.04LTS version of Kubuntu as found here
http://www.kubuntu.org/getkubuntu/download.

If you'd prefer a more solid system that is still managed you might try the LiveCD of Slax or Slax-Remix which presently still uses KDE v3.5.10 which is most like what was on Xandros but newer and actually more refined. They have what I many consider to be a distinct advantage over the *Buntus in the form of Pacman over Synaptic as a package manager. They are found through this website http://www.slax.org/

Both Kubuntu's Synaptic and the Slaxes Pacman are similar to but superior to Xandros Networks with similar caveats. They are only completely safe if you stick to official repositories. It's up to you to decide how much risk you can live with as weighed against how new and how much.

If you don't mind getting into the nuts and bolts to move up to being a real Admin instead of a User you might consider Slackware.

However like Kubuntu, the newest versions use KDE v4 which is quite different from the v3 you are used to from Xandros. Version 4 does more but will have a learning curve that Slax with v3 won't.

This is a screenie of Slax-Remix with KDE v3

[IMG][/IMG]

and this is one of KDE v4 on Slackware v 13.1
[IMG]

Sorry I couldn't find one quickly that shows how different the kicker menu is but I'm hoping the hot chixor makes up for that at least a little However to the lower left of said chixor you will see a black popup menu connected to one of the desktop icons. This might help you see that KDE 4 is to KDE 3 like HTML active desktops were to static Desktops back around Win98 days. 3 is simple and intuitive. 4 is more convoluted and variable.

K using deepburner to make the slackware ISO, it gets stuck on the DOS prompt screen and will not go any further. I used a DVD-RW disc, the ISO was burned correctly, got any ideas?

That depends on what you mean by "stuck on the DOS prompt". If it is actually a DOS prompt I am confuzzled entirely. If OTOH it is the Slackware boot command line I know exactly what that is and I love it. That is a multi-purpose boot prompt that can be used to boot anything. Above the prompt is a paragraph that describes exactly what can be done and even offers some examples such as if you want to boot any Linux distro whose bootloader is damaged or installed improperly with the "mount root = " command.

The paragraph also has a line that explains it's flexibility and use in installing. For example, it says, if you have any special hardware there are several install kernels to choose from and you can even pass other options to it to totally customize and control the install process. It then goes on to say that for basic installation on most machines all you need enter is "setup" and hit the enter key and bingo! you're on the way.

I am not trying to be mean or condescending just honest when I say if that was the screen to which you referred and you didn't bother to read the paragraph then maybe Slackware is not for you. As I said I am not being mean I'm just trying to save you stress and worry. You may do better with a weaker graphic wizard type installer and system until you learn some more.

OTOH if you were just being really careful but you wish you really get deep into how your PC works you should see this tutorial

http://maketecheasier.com/install-an...-13/2010/01/21

It was written for v13 but the installer is absolutely identical for 13.1.

Slax, although it came from Slackware, is easy. First off I'd burn the iso to CD and try it live to see if you like it. It will not alter your existing system in any way. If you like it all you do is copy the files off the CD onto a hard drive partition (either DOS type or Linux) and look in the "/boot" directory and run "liloinst.sh" from a Linux command prompt (the LiveCD provides one) and it will make the drive/partition bootable. Done.

If you need a step by step for either PM me.

I burned the ISO, forced the lappy to only boot off the DvD drive, and all I get is one blinking cursor on the top left, nothing else, I even made a 2nd image on a new DVD, same thing.
