I believe the difference is that on the FX boards, when you use 2 cards, both cards are running at x16. With the GX boards, with 2 cards, both are running at x8. x16 being faster and better.

he shouldnt really tell the difference between 8x and 16x performance-wise

Maybe not but if you bought 2 nice gpus, wouldn't you want them running on the better of the two platforms, getting the most for your hard earned money. OP, do a search on Newegg for a 890fx northbridge motherboard, there are 14 right now and chose a few in your price range and needs. Google the boards and check out the various reviews for the boards you are interested in and maybe find out if there is any problems or faults.

he won't 'get more for his money', there is no difference in benchmarks between 8x and 16x pci, i.e. today's cards won't be bottlenecked by x8 as far as i know (pci 2/2.1 is 500mb per lane, so x16 is 8gb, x8 is 4gb and so on. he won't be able to tell the difference between x16/x16 and x8/x8)

Then what's the point of it?

what's the point of what? why do you think everything must have a point? it's the exact same point as ppl getting cards in SLI, when the gain from adding a 2nd card isn't worth the money spent on it, or when ppl change video cards twice or once a year, or when they buy +2000$ systems when a 1000$ system would fulfill their needs just the same.
not everything here is efficiency-driven.

and regarding the pci bottleneck, who knows maybe tomorrow nvidia will drop the new 6xx series that is so crazy it HAS to have x16 pci interface to not get bottlenecked. very unlikely, but you can never know.

This, is like a 2% difference with generally a much more expensive mobo.

Really I don't think everything has to have a point. Just simply wanted to know the point of manufactures putting in x16 if there no performance gain. Don't have to be so hostel about it.
