Think I might have messed up

So I just installed an aqua computer water block for a gtx470. The machine boots up fine but as soon as I log in to windows it hangs at the welcome screen and although it doesn't crash it hangs at this screen and won't do anything even when pressing ctrl+alt+del.

If I uninstall the 260.99 drivers or boot into safe mode it is ok so it suggest that it is the card, once it starts to do something. Any ideas? Ive just bled my loop to Take a look at the connections andvseems fine and the loop is not having difficulties. the CPU temps seem fine when I am in safe mode.

are you sure the block is making contact with the GPU? I know sometimes the blocks come from the manufacturer with flaws and one is not making contact w the copper. I would recheck all the thermal paste and make sure you have contact in all areas. HTH

It seems to be making contact ok as the thermal paste has transferred to the block from the gpu and ram

if you are fine while in safe mode, then why do you think your problem is related to the new vga watercooling?
I think is more software related. I'd say try reinstalling windows

I know it is related to the card because as soon as I uninstall the 260.99 drivers or boot in to safe mode it is OK. And the only thing that has changed on the card is that it is now water cooled.

I opened up the card again and there was a tiny drop of coolant near to one of the RAM chips. Interesting that the card can be used at all if this was causing a short, so why will it let me boot in safe mode but not in normal windows mode? When normal windows loads it gets to the log on prompt fine in 1080p mode and will sit there happily until I log in.

This was tried with a new installation of windows as well.

This sounds exactly like a problem that I had. Read this thread:

Did the replacement 480 fix the issue for you or was it the HD audio that was causing the issues in the end? Hopefully you are up and running now :-)

The issue was definitely not software related. I tried:

1. Disabling HD audio and then disabling ALL things audio related...didn't work
2. Older Nvidia drivers...didn't work
3. Flashing motherboard BIOS...didn't work
4. flashing card BIOS...didn't work
5. reinstalling windows...didn't work
6. Installing the card in a friend's system...didn't work

And both our systems have been stable until this card was installed.

The final verdict was it that was a hardware related issue with the card. The replacement is arriving sometime next week I will let you know if everything gets fixed

Right now I installed a spare Geforce 8800GT I had laying around and everything is working perfectly with latest Nvidia drivers as always. It definitely had to have been the card because I used to own a GTX 480 Superclocked+ a few months ago and I never experience any problems with it. I just didn't like the heat which is why I sold it and went for a hydro copper

birdy123, did the card work perfectly before you installed the waterblock? Or did you not test it with air cooling?

It was working fine for about 3 months without any issues. The issues started as soon as I water cooled it. Not sure if I have damaged the PCB when removing the heat sink and fan but think not as it looks fine. If I had damaged it then surely even booting to the windows log in would fail? I have no artefacts and the 1080p screen at logon works fine even if I leave it for 30 minutes. What would happen with the GPU during logon that could push it over the edge?

When taking it apart to check the thermal paste I did notice a tiny bit of coolant near to a RAM chip. I've since removed this with a qtip and left it overnight to dry further.
