[A8N32-SLI] Dead BIOS chip or Dead board?

post #1 of 4
Thread Starter
I had some trouble with the sig rig taking ages to POST:
http://www.overclock.net/amd-motherboards/853103-solved-taking-ages-1-5min-post.html

Now, I have nada. No POST.
I have run to the basics, CPU, Mobo, RAM, PSU, GPU
I've tried the other x16 lanes, and the DIMM slots
I recently reseated the CPU for the hell of it as well
Checked for dust in the SKT939 and DIMMs
Pressed down on the BIOS chip
The rig is on a cardboard box. No shorting.

Tested parts on another rig
GPU = OK
CMOS battery = OK
PSU = OK
CPU = OK
RAM = OK

What happens when I press ON
3pin fans = 100%
Molex fans = 100%
No beeps
No POST
SB, NB don't seem to heat up.

Is my board dead or is it just the BIOS chip?
Do BIOS chips die that easily? Was it just down to time?

AFAIK, I haven't done anything dodgy to the board...it just seems to be a failure of an ageing component AKA BIOS chip.

Anyone had experiences with BIOS chips dying on them?

That honestly sounds like a dead board to me unfortunately. I think it might be worth it to call up Asus, and see what they say you can do for RMA. Even if it is out of warranty, they still might be able to repair it for a small fee. That board would certainly be worth it.

First of all, thanks for the response!
I'm glad that your RMA with Gigabyte was finally successful biggrin.gif

As for repairs...it doesn't look too good. I've got a quote from a monitor company before and they wanted to take £150 off my hands to repair a corrupted EDID/DVI connector on an ancient 17" 1280X1024 monitor. kookoo.gif

If this shows anything, I have found that the PS2 keyboard's LEDS (caps lock etc.) flash when I turn the system on.

Is this just a sign that voltage is going through the board or is it initiated via the BIOS?

I could just have a bad bios chip....being a stingy git I really don't want to risk the £12 it costs for a replacement before I have actually found the cause.

*sigh*
I hop you all had a very merry christmas....
