Monster beats by Dr dre -> dissappointed

Well there was good deal on the beats by dr dre.

I picked up the solo ones as a present, but they came in so i decided to try them out before giving them as a gift.

I will say for the price someone is going to pay, I am pretty disappointed.

Marketed towards the consumer end, so it's unfair to compare to high end pro grade.

to be clear, my HD-25's will walk all over these in all categories, and they are sold at about the same price.

The sensitivity on the low end is significantly higher. Also the Harmonic Distortion seems to get higher and higher as you push more power to them, which is generally true for all headphones, but you can significantly tell with these headphones.

Compared to HD-280s the 280's are cleaner and crisper.

For the consumer line, i would not pay $200 for these, but if you can get them for under $100 it wouldn't be too bad.

The mids and lows seem to be very muddy. The quality of the line to the headphones seem to be very nice, but i am very disappointed in the build quality of the headphones. It feels like with normal / decent usage, they won't last too long.

Also the wires inside the headphones connecting the drivers are low end, and with enough use it looks to me like they will need repair.

in short:
- high low end sensitivity
- low build quality of phones it self
- muddy mids, lows, and highs -> bass overpowers everything
- frequency curve more down sloping.
- under $100 not shabby, but anything around $100 or more no deal.
- good amount of sound leakage
- good amount of loss of "air" around vocals
- decent sound isolation
- i do like the headphone connector cable / interlink

if you're an average consumer:
- they look cool -> some props on the street
- a lot of bass, seems to be what the average consumer looks for
- they by dr dre and monster

There's a reason people bash monster and their headphones (turbines excluded)

If you have a best buy around you, you could have given them a listen for free. My bestbiy always has a kiosk that blasts the current most popular rap and pop song with the most bass to try and get the average uneducated consumer.

My friends all love these things. They think they are the BEST... too bad I know otherwise. They can't even compare to a dedicated amp/dac and my Denons.

I need new friends... doh.gif

Heres my Monster Experience
I had a client buy 20 of there midrange XLR cables they were really expensive and guess what? They made really good radio antenna when you dont want them to lol long story short they were returned and they purchased 40 whirlwind cables (way better brand anyway) for the same price.

So ya i could expect there headphones to be overpriced crap I will continue to use my $8 HDMI i got at harbor fright LOL

sennheiser or bust
Heh, reminds me of a few weeks ago when I met up with a lot of friends, and one of them was wearing that model pictured there.

One of our friends was impressed by the recognition factor alone, citing how much they had to have cost, but my friend (who I didn't know was into audio) spoke up about there being much better headphones for the price.

Then he and I got into a great two-person conversation about Grado and Sennheiser, and our friend just stared at us in bewilderment. It's always great to hear more people speaking out against Monster and BOSE for their high costs. smile.gif
