can't clock - possible BIOS problem?

Thread Starter
i have GA-P35-S3G, and i could OC E8500 to 4gHz without problem.
now i have Q8300, and i can't clock it at all, even if i raise FSB for 1mHz, it resets after i reboot, so i started thinking it may be BIOS related (i have F2 version).

so, is installing new BIOS risky, could i make some serious damage?

and if i decide to do BIOS upgrade, should i just install the latest one (F5), or install them all (F3, F4) before the latest one?

Definitely update the BIOS. I have seen some comments that F3a version improves its capabilities. However it is not uncommon for a board to overclock duals but has a hard time with quads. The fact that you can't raise it more than 1 FSB is interesting, however.

i've just updated my BIOS to latest version (F5), but the problem persists.

so maybe i should try with the F3a version.

You could try it, but usually the fixes will stay as the version gets updated. It's worth a try but I would not hope too much.

Do you get past POST after attempting to overclock or does your system reboot just before getting past POST?

Well it surely does sound like a bad BIOS.If you get into your BIOS and do nothing but save it can you get past POST?

Edit: Hey, I just searched a little and found out that some people solved this problem with the F3a BIOS version, good luck with it!
