8800/9800gt 512mb
HD4850 512mb
HD5550
GT240
GTX260
8800GTX

Don't know if there are any better cards that can be got for beer money.

first of all hd 4850,8800gtx are above the budget
better consider gt 240/9600gt actually 9600gt is slightly better than gt 240....
in ati side get hd 5650
My 8800GT's still a decent contender at this resolution, I can still play most of my games maxxed out to be honest, definitely the kind of games you mentioned.

You should have no problem at the resolutions you're talking about and you could get one for less than £40 if you're lucky.

The HD 4850 is apparently quite a bit more powerful, you can probably get one for £50 or oso I would imagine.

I got a GT240 for £30 + del from Novatech... but i just checked them and they put the price up to 55 squids

The GPU is pretty decent and can play alot of games on high (excluding AA and some effects). Definitely those games you said at those resolutions.

For £30 its a steal, but it does not OC well and does not have any power connectors. (Might be pulling near max power for pcie).

Im checking Ebay and all that and it seems like you could get a 250 for about £50/£60 which is pretty good. The 250 is something you (or your friend) would be happy with

Im not sure about the ATI stuff recommended. Not used ATI in years :S

Yeah, if you can find a 250 for the price, that would definitely be a decent choice.

Take a long on the marketplace here and also on the classifieds over at AVForums.com.
