Here's the cheapest option so far:

Asus M4A78LT Mobo
AMD Athlon II X4 630
4GB DDR3
HD 5770

The only thing I'm unsure about is the Athlon - would it be powerful enough to handle some of the more recent games?
My dual-core with a lesser GPU handles GTA IV at medium settings just fine (admittedly at 1280x1024 but the difference between that and 1440x900 isn't THAT great)

I'd say GTX 460, but I would look at the GTS 450; it's cheaper and more likely will be more then enough.

I know.

And my card cost half the price of 5770 when I bought it. It does what I need it to do. No more, no less.

The 450 would be plenty for him (although the 460 would have the horsepower to deal with anything once his cpu is updated)

Instead of getting 4GB DDR2 667MHz, why not just get 2GB ddr2 800mhz? Im sure his board will support it and it would be faster for games

The 630 is fine. Mine did everything I needed it too. GTAIV at highish settings. Crysis maxed. Did SuperPi 1M fairly quickly. I had it overclocked before all hell started breaking loose with my sister and the reset button....

Although, I was playing at 1024x768 at 1360x768 cause I'm brokzors :/
