Yes but firefox handles extensions better, or at least I think it does. Plus there's no way chrome handles memory as well as FF.

If you are judging Firefox by v3 your experience is seriously truncated. You really must try FF 4.0 latest beta to understand where FF is headed. The Linux version is especially good. They development team has grown huge and highly qualified and they have been paying attention. It's a whole new ballgame and part of that is because of the explosion of smartphones. I had given up but I am back on board now.

Hm. I haven't used FF lately, but I guess I could give it a shot. Can you leave a link? I'm not in Linux on either machines. tongue.gif

Trunk & branch builds... I think the Windows version is more polished so you are in luck, it's way nice in FF4b.

I don't know about Windoze but....

For those of you still unconvinced that v4 Firefox has been totally streamlined for small footprint and speed here is a screenie of a recent session of Window Maker running FF 4.0 beta 8 (along with several Gnome and KDE apps) and conky. FF, as shown, is playing a YouTube music video and has 8 tabs open. If you look at conky's "highest cpu" (the "top" command output) just above RAM usage you will see that FF is using approximately twice the CPU of lil' ol' conky. In actuality because usage is so dynamic sometimes FF was using LESS than conky. I had to take 4 screenies to get both listed at the same time.

As for Ram usage FF v 4 beta 8 stays at around 9 MB.

For some others it might also be worthy of note that this single core system with only 2 G RAM is using no swap and only has a 273MB partition dedicated. So you guys planning on Gigs of swap should see you really don't need that much..

Enorbet that's around 9% of your ram, that's how conky reports, which is about 200MB. Still much lower than anything Chrome will ever do. Mine is always around 20%, 400MB, I wonder how yours is so low. =S I get that at the start but after a day or so it'll eventually go up in percent.

[edit] I'll be, looks like they fixed hardware acceleration in the linux one.... Or at least so far so good, generally I'd have an unstable system by now.

Instead of just a snapshot now I have some better data regarding footprint of FF 4.0beta8.
Last night Test Pilot ran and gave me a graph of a weeks worth of usage. Here's an overview:

Firefox stats for 1 week
avg 8 tabs open
91 files downloaded
ram usage avg 130MB
(with 40 bookmarks in 12 folders)

Besides the better footprint of FF4B8 in Linux the complaints in the email thread for 'doze outnumber Linux users' complaints 30 to 1, albeit this could just be because the 'doze version is actually better but 'doze users are llamas 50:1. wink.gifwink.gif nudge nudge

I'm going to double check when I'm in Kubuntu but I don't recall ever seeing more than 200MB being used from Chromium. How many pages/type of pages are we talking here?

Also, is it strange that before I change anything around FF and Chromium are within 50-100MB of each other with FF using the most? I'm starting to think I need my eyes fixed.
