HELP! Updated ubuntu on 1201n and now won't boot!

Thread Starter
As my title reads I installed ubuntu 10.4 using wubi on my asus 1201n. After installation I updated everything using the update manager and now it will not boot. I get a message that says error no such device: followed by a long number I will post if needed. Below that it says grub rescue> and allows me to type in commands.
I have no clue what to do and I cannot access windows 7, please help

P.S. I did not know whether to post this in laptops or in the OS section so feel free to move if necessary, please help as soon as possible.

Your update destroyed the MBR or GRUB.... This is why i never install using Wubi as what you just did (laerned the hard way) turns out bad.

Go in with a live CD (or run ubuntu off of a flash drive) and recover your data. Then after that, wipe and reinstall your machine or try fixing grub. But since ubuntu is on a wubi I don't think that will be possible...

Ok thanks, now because this is a netbook I do not have a dvd drive. On Christmas i'm getting an 8gb flash drive, will that be large enough? Will I need to reinstall windows? thanks for information, really not liking this.

that will be plenty. You will have to use that thumb drive to put Windows 7 onto (or linux) to actually reinstall your OS.... Pain in the ass I know but hey, what can you do?

There are TONS AND TONS of guides on the web for how to do this. Just look up "how to install windows 7 USB" and "How to install ubuntu from USB" and you will find plenty of guides.

http://www.intowindows.com/how-to-in...working-guide/

http://www.pendrivelinux.com/univers...easy-as-1-2-3/

If you like I can help you remotely.

When you dual boot, run a linux from the USB and partition your drive to however you like it.

If it is 160GB drive, then I would (whichever you will use the most) 100GB for windows and 60 for linux. Linux MUST HAVE AT LEAST 4GB, but I recommend at least 8.

Next use the USB that you have setup to install windows, and install it on whichever partition you want. Windows MUST HAVE at least 40GB to install onto (7 and vista, I think 20 for XP).

After that, setup your USB so that you can install linux from it. After that repeat to install ubuntu onto your netbook.

Nice thing is that Ubuntu will automatically "see" windows and add it to GRUB, thus giving you an immediate dual boot.

Done. Plus if you update Ubuntu it won't break it again, and if windows goes BOOM linux will not be affected like it would be with wubi. The reason being is that Wubi makes a vitural disk in windows for ubuntu to run off of... this is not exactly safe and prone to failure.

Ok thanks man, I did read I can fix the MBR, which I bet is whats causing the problem, using a windows repair disc. I'm following a guide to put it on my currents usb drive. I really would like to tried a re-installation till i'm sure I have no choice left. I do greatly appreciate your help and will post in about an hour whether I was success full at recovery.

Alright sounds good. After you repair the MBR, go and remove wubi. From there you can shrink your drive within windows and give youself room to dual boot ubuntu properly.

Sometimes the easiest method ends up being the hardest in the end.

Well looks like i'll spend Christmas morning reinstalling windows 7, I only have a 256 mb flash drive which I made a recovery drive but my bios won't boot it, I did go into bios and change the boot order but that did not help. I didn't install anything important on it anyway so I guess I don't mind, i'll start downloading installation files tonight when I can get onto my brothers computer, im on his school laptop right now. Thanks for help.

EDIT: I need the installation files for windows to do a reinstall via usb drive, I have the key under my laptop so I can activate it. Anybody know where I can get the files, I don't know where my disc is but I'll try looking some more. Please help so I can fix this problem quickly, really need my laptop.
